I'm about to head to work but let me see what I can dig up, later today. By the way love Grand Belial's Key. Those dudes know how to write riffs. And if you don't have an aversion to sometimes racist lyrics, you'll definitely like Arghoslent. No one writes catchier death metal songs than Arghoslent, they're basically the Grand Belial's Key of death metal.

I'm up in north NJ, a little bit outside of NYC doing process design for petrochemicals/refining/anything with hydrocarbons. I'm always listening to black metal in fact listening to Bone Awl right now, though they're not really up your alley. Actually just listened to some Mgla last night. Fucking love Mdłości + Further Down the Nest especially this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qci5BOtenA). Also been listening to a lot of Velvet Cacoon of late. Not sure if you'd like them, they're kind of Burzumy. Really fuzzy, warm, atmospheric black metal with some hissing vocals.

You're right there's not anything really like them. They're often called "orthodox black metal" but the bands within this "genre" diverge widely. Your best bet might be Blut Aus Nord's "The Work Which Transforms God". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSnB5wjynGs and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChHxWY7_OwI. Funeral Mist's "Salvation" has the same sort of lyrical thing going on but the music is not as up to snuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4BoDgKsG4k. At this point I'm just kind of throwing out shots in the dark but you might also like Lurker of Chalice, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GBSIq1UWmg. Wormlust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wh2Cck8svr0. Not very similar but if you like DsO's vocals then you might like Aspa's solo project Clandestine Blaze, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADi1AQ654Cg. Are you looking for something more chaotic like "Fas..." or something more along the lines of "Si..."?

Answering your question on Anaal Nathrakh's page, I think you should listen to "In The Constellation of The Black Widow".

i don't know- i've always liked a lot of experimental and progressive stuff. i also have the hipster kid in me so i like a lot of indie too but i'm always into music that isn't so predictable and pretty (if that makes any sense to you lol.)

Just listening to Summoning now and thought that they might be the perfect introductory black metal band for you. Vocals aren't very harsh, not too much distortion, and a very warm production. Plus they are the most epic, and I do not use this term loosely, band that I've ever heard. So if you get a chance check out them out. I suggest "Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame" or "Oath Bound."

Post continued... Also Deathspell Omega's Fas - Ite, Maledicti, in Ignem Aeternum and Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice are both masterpieces but extremely challenging albums but I get the feeling that you'd appreciate them. I have about a 1,000 more albums I could recommend but I think that that will suffice for now. Also a note about listening to black metal, normally I get the most out of it when listening at night and alone as it supplements the atmosphere of the music.

Well I strongly recommend Darkthrone but they can be kind of harsh to listen to at first. They're 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums are often viewed as their best, though I think their 5th can also make that case. For them I'd suggest Under a Funeral Moon, Transilvanian Hunger (a really love/hate album but generally viewed as their magnum opus), and Panzerfaust. However, given your tastes I think you should check out in this approximate order, Emperor-In the Nightside Eclipse, Emperor is the only band that can really pull off symphonic metal in my eyes, Dissection-Storm of the Light's Bane or The Somberlain, both good pieces of melodic black metal, Burzum-Hvis Lyset Tar Oss or Filosofem, any of the 3 full length of Wolves in the Throne Room, Summoning-Stronghold, Peste Noire-La Sanie des siècles - Panégyrique de la dégénérescence, my favorite black metal album but it's a pretty harsh listen, Mayhem-De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, another one of my personal favorite.

Yeah I've heard Souvenirs and liked it a lot. Neige also has another band, Amesoeurs, who just broke up but released a self titled album in 2009 that is a lot like Alcest but probably a little more black metal than post-punk and shoegaze. You might like it if you haven't already heard it. And I'm just becoming a big fan of My Bloody Valentine of late because for the longest time I had mixed them up with the metalcore band Bullet For My Valentine, whom I hate.

If you're looking for some vocalist who sound like Devin Townsend, check out the band Textures. Eric Kalsbeek mostly screams, but his croons are more inspired by Devin and sings cleanly mostly in the songs Awake and Messengers.
