Sweet! The red scarf part makes me think of the design given to her in a music video by AbsoЯute Zero : https://youtu.be/wcUM5_z2VgQ Fun song btw

Oh man I have no idea how I listened to that many tracks in one week. I think I might be more shocked than you are haha.

Envy really perfected the whole formula. I can't help but feel "I'd rather listen to All The Footprints..." whenever I hear someone do it themselves. Unfortunately no band can stack up to those early 2000s albums from Envy.

I wish I had an idea of why they switch so much. I wonder if HIHA's split with Cohol has anything to do with this, even though Cohol is leagues ahead of them in their black metal sound. Reminds me of that really awkward middle phase from Envy where they went to really shitty, boring post-rock (sometime around Insomniac Doze). I partially blame that Jesu split, seems like they wanted to fit in there.

Ah, I feel you on that. I really only go for torrents on older shit that I can't find anyway, but I was curious and wanted to give the new album a listen. I'm not surprised they've finally morphed into a boring black metal band. Erosion is still miles ahead of anything they've done since.

Yep! If that camera is pointed a little bit more to the left you'd probably see me in the video as well. It was a really great show.

You and a lot of other people, definitely not the first person to say that to me. Disappointed by how little promotion Topshelf did for it. Lite is also doing a US tour in March with Mouse on the Keys. Both bands posted about it, but Topshelf seemed to just fuck off on the whole thing, even though they're releasing a LITE/Mouse on the Keys split.

I can't really say for the industry as I'm not involved with it, but most bands don't seem to give a damn at all. Fredelica's Gaitou was released at the tail end of 2014 (and is still something I can consider an all-time favorite) and Tied Knot's At The End of the Rainbow was released on December 31st of 2015. I don't think most people really consider making a year end list as an objective reason to push back/move forward a release date.

Well people usually do their year end stuff now, lists etc. I think it's just standard now, which is why you don't see a lot of December albums in year end lists. Just following the established norm is my guess.

You probably know French screamo better than me haha. I never dove too heavily into that scene.

Damn, that's basically a world of music I don't know too much haha, I think you might know more than me already. I don't really connect with that music outside of HIHA and envy, and honestly Sed Non Satiata is by far the best french screamo band.

For Piano BGM stuff, check out Janis Crunch, Tomoya Naka, Yuki Murata (my favorite Japanese pianists), stuff from Schole Label, Kitchen Label., and Yuki Murata's various bands on Ricco Label (Anoice, etc.).

I took a quick look through your last.fm and I see you haven't listened to City of Caterpillar at all. Their full length is pretty much the book on post-rock/screamo (and was my gateway into screamo music but thats me.) Also check out: Funeral Diner's The Underdark (their earlier stuff was pretty emo violence), Unripe from Okinawa, and 3cm Tour. 3cm Tour is definitely an all time favorite.

Also don't know how much you use bandcamp, but I find a lot of new stuff on there I wouldn't have known otherwise.

Nah never got to meet HIHA. That show was jam packed. Like, entire venue was packed like sardines packed. I dipped out as soon as I could because it was way too hot in there haha. If you ever need recs let me know! The only reason I haven't stopped finding new music is because I'm far past obsessive with finding new bands out of Asia.

I met a lot of bands. Every single person was so nice. Haha man I'm sure those old sputnik reviews are embarrassing, I wrote those like 7 years ago or something haha.

Yea I can imagine that. Honestly everyone I met was able to at least speak basic english which was nice. Other than that, the ol' point and grunt works for ordering food haha. I'm probably not the best to ask about that though. I met a lot of bands while there! I had a lot of fun at all the after parties of shows just talking with everyone.

Definitely the best time I've ever had. The bands, people, food, everything was just the best. It bolstered my desire to move over there for sure, so now I'm trying to see what I can do in a year. I'll either return for a vacation or something more permanent haha. If you ever get the chance, definitely do it!

This is my first time ever actually! Took long enough to save enough vacations days AND the money for the trip. I might try to make this a yearly thing though.

I'd imagine you'd still be able to have fun even if you didn't know anyone. I only know people because my head is so far into the Japanese scene I can't escape even if I wanted to haha. They are super nice people though, and would probably be happy just to hear you say you like their band. If you ever do stop in there, look for shows before hand on twitter! A lot of shit gets posted on there.

A friend of mine is going to be taking me around Tokyo at least one day. I imagine I'm going to wonder a ton though before I go to shows and shit. At the rate I'm going at though I might not even leave Tokyo for my entire vacation lol.

I'm going to be seeing them at Shimokitazawa Shelter on May 15th. They said they'll be playing new stuff there so I'm pretty excited. Gonna be asking them about doing US distro stuff anyway so maybe I'll drop a US tour hint as well.
