Hmm you should definitely start with In absentia and Deadwing.. they are bloody brilliant peaces of work :) And maybe it's good to know that Blackfield's song Christenings was originally written for Porcupine Tree's album Deadwing but was never released.

from what I've heard, noise is a sub-genre from industrial and others influences, so it's an extreme, every sub-genre is considered exteme, for the fact that it goes fruther with a concept.
