hm. well, to be honest, whether her fandom has a "problem" really depends on which part of the fandom we're talking about. there's a lot of people coming more from the nicole dollanganger side of things who are very open to the more transgressive and unpleasant elements of her work, and i have no problem with those people and even sort of count myself among them. the bigger issue with her fandom is that she's in a strange position in the industry where she's at once producing work that is very dark and she obviously has very dark interests due to personal trauma as well as her baseline aesthetic sensibilities, while also incorporating elements of pop that attract irony-poisoned stan twitter types which has really poisoned the discourse around her and made it more difficult to have an honest conversation about her art and not her personality or some memeified version of her aesthetic. as far as this business about her "not helping", hasn't she tried? she's openly annoyed by her fans.

I'm pretty sure she likes it more then anything if she's addressing it there's a lot of things she's done to egg them on its weird how strange people can get towards an artist and its a big reason why I don't think being famous would be a good fit for a lot of people but even if she is openly annoyed by her fans she's still allows the behavior

unsure what this business is about her giving tracks to people to "gatekeep". my understanding is that she would rather people forget about her pre ethel cain work and stop bringing it up, since she made a whole post about this. nevertheless im not really interested in that topic. if people want to get really obsessive about her work and if she "eggs them on" that's not a big deal to me. im much more irritated by the way stan culture makes it difficult to discuss her work in an intelligent manner.

fwiw i'm not the only person who's had to deal with their bullshit. they are infamously more interested in executing their personal vendettas than actually moderating their website sensibly. the site's actual staff are completely okay with this and are extremely dismissive of any complaints people make about it. i should also not that i was paying for - monetarily supporting - their website at the time of my ban. so they are more interested in being petty than running a business. maybe i, too, am petty for still caring so much but if you (or anyone reading this) are interested in subscribing to rateyourmusic i would advise against it unless you have the most inoffensive personality known to man or you have no interest in the social functions (including lists and reviews).

it's bullshit that they did that to you. i've never really noticed anything since i don't use the site much on a social level but abuse of power in any hierarchy doesn't really shock me. :/ you were one of my favorite users on the site! i'm pretty sure i discovered 7 angels 7 plagues' album by going through your metalcore ratings, and it's since become one of my favorite albums ever. ditto for split personalities by 12 rods which is another favorite. thank you for somewhat shaping a stranger's taste in music. <3

i like that you draw a parallel between the lyrics being about this codependent relationship but also about isaac's relationship to the band itself as a cultural item. there are a lot of cool revelations in here, a few i had not thought about before, so it's very perceptive! i think if you want any constructive criticism it would be to try to weave your ideas together a bit more rather than a track-by-track recounting of the album. i think also more elaborating on that aforementioned connection between the relationship and the band via the concord metaphor would be really interesting!

I totally agree with you. Chemistry within a band is so essential to creating quality music, which I'm glad is well and alive even after Isaac's departure from the band. I think the new direction taken by the band was the best decision. Isaac was a major vein and did a phenomenal frontier job that cannot be replicated, and why should they? Bands are rarely ever the same after major departures, so this was an opportunity to a fresh new start. Great musicians like them should continue to explore and expand themselves. I think so long there's a desire to create and collaborate, the band can do anything really. The new album is very beautiful too. I think a lot of the disappointment from fans is reflective of how many still reminisce on Isaac days, but I think Forever Howlong is a beautiful debut to a new era, and to that I say, it is a job very well done by the female frontiers and the whole band in general.

With that said... as someone who's not in the band, I'm not really in any position to chirp about what style or direction they "need" to pursue next. If FH is the result of BCNR scratching their creative itch as hard as they can, then more power to them. To loop back to Deafheaven, I keep wondering what it would be like if this was their 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦 𝘎𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦. I personally enjoy[ed] IG, but I know a lot of folks can't say the same. And part of me does think that it was an "essential" album for the band to write at the time, to get them to a place that eventually led to LPWP. I'd love to see FH become this detour of sorts for BCNR. Mastery of a style [that I personally may not love] before moving onto something new, and entirely grander. I won't hold my breath or anything, but it's been a fun idea to entertain.

Oh, and yeah: your results with Hesse Kassel may vary a bit, haha. It's probably the most egregious "copy" of a band's style that I've heard in recent years. Part of me is grateful that my Spanish is so rusty, because I think if I understood the lyrics there could be even more parallels to draw. It's quite honestly Negro País, Nuevo Camino: 𝘍𝘰𝘳 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦... but twice as long. Which I think is also a testament; at 1 hour 18 minutes, it's got a beast of a runtime. But it's really flown by, the two times I've tried it out, and I think there's something really special happening when it's not blatantly ripping off FTFT. 😅 No pressure to feel any way – good or bad – about it, but I'd love to hear your thoughts when & if you get around to it.

i was thinking something similar about FH being a sort of transitory album honestly, even though i do love it about as much as the band's other work (i mean it's been a few days, i guess we'll see if that holds up; i admit my fandom might blind me to this or that, though i'd like to think not overly so). it comes off a bit like the band trying finally prove themselves as this new 6-member unit and whether people personally enjoy it i think a lot of people can admit the talent level is so astronomical that it kind of accomplishes that goal anyway. i would hope that the next record elaborates on what they're doing with FH in some compelling way. i was familiar with so many of the songs in live form tbh that i can't help but already be looking to the future anyway lol.
