Every time I see Kurosawa's "Rashomon" I cannot help but see it an allegory for pre-Imperialist Japan (Japan being the woman ravaged by forces beyond her control). I've often wondered what Akutagawa might have written had he lived. As a Japanese writer, he was quite ahead of his time, an anachronism. Indeed, I see much of him in the works of modern Japanese writers and artists. My only sadness is that I only know his work through translation, and not the original text (so much gets lost). I think he would feel quite at home in our world, though.
