Right, I get where you're coming from there. Unfortunately, the song's character itself is what drives me away, so... I'd pretty much say about every Björk song makes IOSQ pale in comparison, except maybe some of the dodgier B-sides like Gloomy Sunday. Uh, I also kinda noticed you haven't listened to anything since March... are you busy?

It's Oh So Quiet. Seriously, that's like the worst song ever recorded in the history of the universe, and I'm half-joking there. I don't only hate it but I'm also angry with how it caused me to think Björk sucked until I turned 20 FFS. Debut definitely shows its age though, some of the synths and drum machines sound real cheesy now.

(Pluto dammit, forgot Pluto! That song is so metal.)

I guessed as much. Björkwise, I thought Debut and Medúlla were patchy, but the other albums were awesome - Post is at least 1000x better if you remove its worst song! But the best is Vespertine. It only took one listen for it to become one of my favourite albums, and I have a CD copy of it now as well! So, yeah, Vespertine for the epic win. And Homogenic (it has All Is Full of Love on it, FFS!), Post, Volta and Biophilia. The thing I've noticed is that I tend to prefer her more ambient material as opposed to the dancier stuff (which gets pretty dire on Debut). But the near-industrial stuff like Army of Me and Earth Intruders is also awesome because I'm such a predictable rockist who judges songs' quality based on how close they sound to rock, haha. And you? Which are your favourites?

Well, it beats my logorrhea, I guess. :) (And yeah, some people in the class did end up kinda saying they agree with it but think it "goes too far" or whatever. I have no clue how this kind of... stereotypical? thinking meant to discredit the movement ended up kinda becoming, like, an accepted belief. Probably should blame existing power structures, they always have incentives to try and discredit anything that tries to alter the status quo.)

(TB really H, I agree with feminism but I'm usually reluctant to call myself "feminist" 'cos I feel like I haven't done anything to deserve that - I never, like, protested against anything, volunteered for anything, or whatever, so calling myself that without anything to back it up sounds a bit too much like dishonest bandwagon-jumping to me...)

Fun story? Earlier today I had a lecture on Gender and International Relations, and the teacher did a show of hands at one point asking who in class identified as "feminist". Only 4 people raised their hands, and I was the only guy to do that... that felt odd, so little. (After trying to also ask who's explicitly anti-feminist he only got *one* hand, and it became clear everybody was just on the fence...) I have no idea why I can bring this kinda stuff up okay on the internetz, but in real life suddenly I sound/feel out of place...? (Oh, and I finally openly listened to Kimbra. I like her! No idea if you would though...)

And yeah, it can get quite depressing seeing that kind of ignorance that thinks that just because feminism has "fem" in its name it somehow means that it's excluding men. (if anything, the problem seems to be the cis people excluding trans people, judging from what I've read, but that's a whole different issue. Not to mention splits along racial lines.) (Random other note: in fact, I secretly listened to Kimbra's album Vows on Monday [secret because I didn't want to break my Tori binge, nyeah], and I really enjoyed the last song, which is just unabashedly stealing from Björk [it mostly steals from Ambergris March until the parts where it decides to be All Is Full of Love instead]. So I guess my thing is I'd probably like Björk more if she had a different set of vocal cords. I mean, other people swiping her seems to go fine by me... it's a Dylanish/Cohenish thing, isn't it? [Dylan and Cohen can write, but they can't fucking sing, so covers beat the originals for me everytime.])

That's the thing that I could never get past, the ridiculously thick accent and the Creepy Child kind of vibe I got from her voice (why did I get such a vibe? Beats me. I think the high pitch might have something to do with it. Kate Bush has the same problem... I can't listen to her 1978-1982ish stuff because her voice just sounds too prepubescent and it weirds me out.). In fact, yes, I've already listened to Biophilia and liked it, and way in the dark days before last.fm circa 2007 I had a go at listening to her, and still remember enjoying the music but the vocals less so (Human Behaviour, All Is Full of Love and the transition from whatever comes before Airplane to Airplane is what I remember chiefly. Sometimes maybe Aurora too, memory playin' tricks on me and all) - this was the era when I was stupid enough to not get Tori (yes, to my eternal shame, the first time I tried Tori it didn't stick... :(). But now I think I have the optimal solution since I deleted the track I hate most.

(I'm quite sure I wouldn't want to meet men who aren't feminists though. Or... uh, anybody who isn't...)

80s/90s alt-rock is da best! :D I've got a Björk listening planned in the future, so I can finally get over my idiotic hatred of her that I've had since I was a kid and, actually, oh I dunno, grow the fuck up a bit (enough to be able to say I like her music but not her vocals...). I mean, compared to her, Tori isn't acquired taste at all! (Tori at least has entry points I can use, like guitars, grunge dynamics on UTP, rockouts and the like.) Yeah, he is! Shame I have to try and ignore the rest since he's kind of a jerk (like too many artists I like...). I probably shouldn't have brought gender into the thing, since it's really more of a thing where I tend to focus more on music, and the "paying attention to lyrics" part comes way down on the list (some stuff I've listened to enough to memorise the lyrics but I still don't really register them consciously - more like something that just happens in a song), but other people probably reverse that.

(I mean, if anything, I seem to latch a bit onto Pink because it has Cornflake Girl, and no songs that scare the shit out of me, which I guess makes it an easier listen?)

It's always Earthquakes, isn't it? :) (does it make me weird that I don't seem to instantly seize onto TA albums or relate to them as easily as other people? Something to do with my gender, or just weird listening habits that don't emphasise emotional responses to songs? I don't know...) I've kind of made a commitment to only scrobble female artists for a while (mostly to strengthen the lead of female vocals over male vocals in my charts...), and right now I'm in the middle of trying to finish a Tori binge - it's hard, I fell a bit sick a few days ago and suddenly my "want to listen to music" just kind of vanished, argh! -, but I've been secretly listening to stuff from Prince's vault, Devo, official Prince stuff, and, uh... people associated with Prince. I think that might be my next binge at some point, but now I'm kinda neurotic about charts, so I'll probably delay it until I'm certain that there's no chance anything'd dislodge Tori from #2 for now. What else have you been into?

Thanks! I love Just for a Day, Souvlaki and Pygmalion more or less equally, but if you forced me to play favourites it'd probably end up either a tie between the first two or Souvlaki edging slightly ahead. Don't get me wrong, I dig Pygmalion, but I somewhat prefer the shoegazing stuff. Tori's easy - Choirgirl and Venus. I still love the other 1990s albums, but those two just edge on ahead very obviously. Yours?

I find guitar difficult too, so I guess I still need to work on it. Flute and tuba, that's an unusual choice. Does that mean that if you were born a decade earlier you could've joined a ska band? :)

Oh, don't worry, I did that. :) I never ever tried or managed to stay up a whole night, but y'never know, I might have to turn in an essay late sometime... Thanks! The chords kinda killed me though. I think I started to practice guitar properly about 2007, so that makes it... 4-5 years, depending on the exact date. Needless to say, I still have quite a ways to go. You play anything?

Thanks! Uh, I stayed up late to finish recording the guitars on a cover of "Agent Orange", so now I'm already kinda tired, even before my tutorial at 10. (Usually I have Tuesdays off, but they had to reschedule one of last week's tutorials today.) I'm hoping some Coke might fix this problem. Tho' I guess you might not have this problem since right now when I'm typing this, it's somewhere between 1:05-3:05 AM depending on where in the USA you live (excluding Hawaii and Alaska, because I never remember their time zones properly).
