yes, them. well, it depends on what you've heard.. VORTEX does not have drums machine-try that, and i'd wager to say that "fcking fulloon foundation" and "satan macht frei" are two of the best black metal albums of all time. very evil, destructive riffs, and good lyrics. worth a second review. avoid the "earlier stuff"... those two are the main ones.

Honestly, I prefer DsO's newer material, but I like to go back to the older stuff every now and then to remind myself where DsO came from. To observe their evolution is a fascinating experience, in retrospect. I can't complain about anything they've done. Darkthrone is so bland, lifeless and boring to me. Under a Funeral Moon is alright, compared to the rest of Darkthrone's work. I find bands like Darkthrone and Marduk to really have outlasted their welcome in black metal. They're entirely irrelevant now - at least their music is. I can't take too much away from the older stuff - Marduk's older material is great, but the new stuff makes me want to drown myself. They're just not interesting anymore. On the other hand, most of the black metal that I enjoy that is on the noisier side of things is pretty new - bands like Nekrasov, Wrnlrd, Gnaw Their Tongues, Aderlating, and so on. Obviously a different vein than what you were getting at, but yeah.

I have a long journey to make tomorrow, so I shall give it a couple of attentive listens on the way. If the lyrics are up to the usual Dubin standard then that's a definite bonus.

Wow, 51 plays of Portal, eh? Yes, they're quite curious. The riffs are often not repeated at all - I am somewhat tired of how about 95% of all bands repeat the same riffs all the time. It's probably easier to keep track of on stage but then I am not a great fan of live music. Neither Katharsis nor Deathspell Omega play live, anyways, hah. I love dissonant riffs. I often think of them as the Deathspell Omega of death metal. I can't say I would associate Morbid Angel much with dissonance, though. At first I was surprised by you mentioning Immolation but they do indeed have some dissonant riffs at times. I'd consider Morbid Angel riffs more melodic/conventional though. Both those bands are predominantly still power chord/minor scale based to me. To me dissonance is about playing multiple strings simultaneously such that they sound rather... let's say 'uncomfortable' together (say, G# and A on a standard E tuned guitar on the lower two strings (4, 0)).

Yes, that sort of emotion and sentiment is far too common, but I think it important to understand that intelligence, thoughtfulness, and articulate expression cannot be drowned out by pure anger. So your words will always ring truer than those of angry skinheads. Anger can be an instrument, sure, but if not accompanied by some well-thought out positions, it usually goes nowhere. I generally share your thoughts on nationalism, but I also think it has led to some positive outcomes for revolutionary movements. Just a thought.

Its nice to see someone with something intelligent to say on a black metal band's board. Sarcastic_Smile and antitype always have thoughtful things to say, but I just wanted to express my appreciation for your intelligence and your willingness to speak up on the Druskh shoutbox. Nice charts, too.
