you think there's gonna be a new btbam album this year? normally there should be considering it's been 3 years since Colors II, but I imagine the whole Dustie situation may have made things a bit more complicated...

Yeah, I have the same bad premonitions about this. I haven't followed the story since it emerged, so I've no idea about the new developments. BTBAM's success has been partially due to their lineup consistency across the years, and now it is breaking apart. They will need to find a stand-in guitarist for the time being, which is no easy task given the complexity of BTBAM's repertoire. Let's hope for the best still.

Same here. I like lots of different kinds of music myself, and whatever styles that aren't on the top of my charts aren't necessarily outside of what I find interesting but just mostly something I couldn't find enough time for to dive into deeply. You seem to be into the mainstream a lot more than me though. What do you like about Korn so much? (genuinely curious to know given the other bands you have on your charts)

My taste in music has evolved greatly since childhood. To give you an idea, the first band I adored was Scooter :0 Then came some rap stuff, mostly Russian bands. But then I gradually started exploring new genres and it was at that time that I discovered bands like Korn, SOAD, Slipknot, Mudvayne, Linkin Park and other alternative/nu metal bands. That was a breath of fresh air music-wise. I favoured Korn most because of their lyrics, catchy choruses and Jonathan Davis' vocals, not to mention Fieldy's signature and unmistakable bass. Besires, for an alternative/nu-metal band, Korn is fairly diverse and experimental, all of their albums are unique and not repetitive. I'm grateful to these mainstream bands because they kind of laid the foundation for my understanding of heavy music and encouraged me to explore further and branch out into other domains.

I've been into music since childhood also. I had one of Korn's cassettes way back and I liked it a lot, and even now I play songs I used to listen way back. I too feel grateful to these bands that were popular enough for me to find out about their music and then gradually get into other genres, but it also makes me wonder what if bands I'm into now had better exposure and just as abundant resources; that would be an ideal-world scenario, but I really wish awesome bands of all times were more known, it would a win-win for everybody. The world wide web has certainly helped the world in that direction. Which makes me feel grateful to Tim Berners-Lee in turn also lol (seriously though.)

Yeah, there are indeed too many unknown and underground bands that are barely noticed by the wider public. On the other hand, what if these were better known, maybe they wouldn't make such great music? People always say that mainstream bands sell their souls for money)) Any recommendations that you may have for me?) I'm always open to something new. On my part, I would highly recommend Archspire to you. You will definitely find this band interesting, especially the drummer who is an absolute beast of a man.

It wouldn't be the same if they got more exposure but nothing can be said that would apply to all bands. Some would sell out, most I believe would make music they want to make and that they would've made anyway. I've come across some music that is so great but at the same so criminally underknown that it almost hurts and makes me think of them as having been wronged by the powers that be. I'm familiar with Archspire, good musicianship but I'm not listening to extreme metal lately. You can check out Alluvial, and Merrow also (same people involved). Aweome instrumental stuff.

Seen you in the shout boxes of my favorite bands often enough so I gave you a follow. VOLA Witness was definitely on my top of 2021 as soon as I heard the full album the first time. The new Colors 2 track is insane as well, so that's probably going to be #1 for the year until I hear the new Obscura album haha. Fortitude is killer as well, but a bit softer than usual. Still has the right sound, cheers.

Hello there! Here's a follow back! Yes, VOLA's latest two albums are great. There are not many new prog metal / rock bands that I like, but VOLA is an exception. I'll be waiting until Colors 2 is released in full, I don't want to spoil the experience by listening to singles, I think. Gojira actually surprised me, I don't like L'Enfant Sauvage and Magma much, just some tracks, but Fortitude hit home. They're exploring new ground and developing. I don't really appreaciate bands that keep on doing the same music for 20-30 years (Sorry, Lemmy!)

I don't mind bands changing directions either, I think it is great if a band decides to experiment with their music. The thing is that, in my view, these changes are sometimes of low quality and lack ideas and novelty. Take for example BMTH who have gone completely soft rock, and while I liked their first steps in that area, I find the latest album to be extremely boring and lacklustre. Overall, 2020 was a mediocre year in terms of music for me. There are but a few top notch albums. I hope 2021 will be more prodigal. I am expecting an album from my all-time favourite in Between the Buried and Me. If they release a banger, I might as well consider 2021 to be a good year music-wise :) What are you expecting this year?
Actions
-
Teppichrasen
Yeah i agree, changes can be great but often feel like the band wants to appeal to a larger crowd except of pushing their boundaries and making the sound they like to. For BMTH I have to say, I listen to them since Sempiternal, never got into their Deathcore stuff, but I quite like their sound change. I get what you mean it's quite soft but they have a unique style if you ask me. Have you checked out their latest EP? If not then you should, it's definitely a step away from their softer stuff, some really great tunes on there. For me the last year was the opposite of yours I think, I had so much to listen to I wasn't even able to hear everything I wanted to. But I guess thats because I really expanded even more into a lot of new genres last year while also remaining listening to the ones I like anyways. A lot of punk and experimental bands I'm hyped for this year. Xiu Xiu got something new coming up as well as Weezer with 2 new albums which I'm pretty hyped for. The band has a large...

... discography and mostly the albums are hit or miss, but they've already came out with an amazing and unique new album this year so I'm looking foreward to the other one as well. Also I can't wait for the new Offspring album, the first in 9 years. They are the band which got me into punk and overall "harder" music when I was 9 years old. Then there's slowthai, a UK rapper which you might enjoy as well. He dropped his new album on friday and it's just amazing. Yeah and like I said, a lot of other stuff I'm hyped for! Also I'm crossing my fingers for a new Converge record or even some new Dillinger Escape Plan stuff, I remember them saying as they released Dissociation, that they recorded 2 albums and wanted to release the other one at a later point. Maybe 5 years after their "final" album the time has come :D

It was a pretty uneventful year for music, wasn't it? Anyway I'm doing fine. Been spending more time on rateyourmusic lately, which is kinda funny because I don't really like rating music. But it's a good place to learn about new stuff coming out and seeing with which albums I probably won't have to bother. Needless to say it's much more active than this trash heap of a site.

I've heard about this rateyourmusic stuff, maybe gonna check it some day for lulz. Yeah, music-wise, it's been a mediocre year. My top 5 are probably (in no particular order): Eminem, The Ocean, Greg Puciato, Anaal Nathrakh, Protest the Hero. I also fell in love with Frank Sinatra this year when Russia went into lockdown in the spring. Pretty cool guy, I'd say. On a separate note, I attended a gig of In Flames in the first half of the year. They kick ass dude. Looking forward to BTBAM's album next year as well.

*belligerent Russian balalaika intro* Once upon a vodka time, in a small Russian Cossack village lived a poor man called Vodka. Vodka loved drinking vodka so much that he vodkaed himself to vodka-death one day. His mother, surprisingly also called Vodka, decided to lay him to vodka rest in vodka clad in a pair of vodka. *spooky drumming inspired by a bottle of vodka* At night, Vodka with Vodka clad in a pair of vodka went to a vodka lake near the village. Vodka put Vodka in vodka and recited a vodka prayer in memory of his vodka soul. Vodka's tears came running down her cheeks, slowly dipping into the vodka lake. Afterwards, a vodka monument was built in that place. Long may live Vodka, the poor victim of vodkaism, vodkahood, and vodkakind *outro, OST from the feature movie Vodka, Vodka, Be My Guest, I Will Drink You at Your Behest*

It's a bit of a stretch, but yeah, I guess you could call them that. They only do live shows though, and they're mostly spoken word, but REALLY intense once they get the show going, I kid you not. Never seen a crowd get so emotional. It's like an inversion of danger music, definitely an acquired taste, but I promise when you've been there you'll never want to listen to Arctic Monkeys again. Oh yeah, I tried to get my hands on some merch but nobody there speaks English apparently. sorry for the late reply but it took me a couple days to fully digest your ranking. not only would i rather drown in a barrel of piss than having to listen to In Flames ever again, but i really enjoyed the dirt under Uncle Johnny's fingernails which was unfairly criticized for its alledged lack of innovation (show me another song with a fucking OBOE SOLO), though I do agree that the mixing could've been better. it just leaves a bad taste in your mouth. which isn't to say it's not miles better than whatever elephant's turd has been up to, frankly I don't give a dime about that cocksucking piece of shit, yes you can quote me on that. I just wanted to express my disappointment with your ranking which is honestly the biggest pile of garbage I've seen since that new Opeth album came out.

Fear Inoculum is the fifth studio album by American rock band Tool. It is the band's first album in thirteen years, due to creative, personal, and legal issues band members encountered since 2006's 10,000 Days. The album consists of seven main tracks of music, and a run time just short of 80 minutes, the maximum runtime of CDs. The concept of seven is a recurring theme of the album both musically and conceptually; Chancellor and Jones wrote guitar riffs in unusual time signatures related to the number seven, while Keenan introduced ideas related to seven as well. The album also explores the concept of growing "older and wiser". Keenan explained that the album covers the idea of "embracing where we are right now, acknowledging where we've come from and some of the things we've gone through." Keenan also advised that patience and multiple listens were required in understanding the album, comparing it to a slowly developing movie.

Actions
-

By the full version you mean those intros that were left out in the leaked version? I like it so far. I am glad that they have preserved their Toolish sound and production but still managed to produce something entirely new. Fear Inoculum does not fully resemble any of their previous works. Some pieces of this, some pieces of that but that's it. The only problem I have with it is that it sounds like a one loooooong song divided into parts. I mean, I wish it were more varied like my fav 10,000 Days that has songs like Wings and the Pot which are entirely different.

Full version just leaked! I must say though, some of the tracks do overstay their welcome a little bit. This could've very well been a 70 minute album and not much substance would've been lost. I agree that it's lacking variety. That's why 7empest is so good, because it starts off very oldschool and then goes full overdrive. Right now I still prefer Lateralus and 10k but that doesn't say much!

I guess it's difficult to compare the two since Vector is much more condensed, but that's probably why I prefer it to DOT. Well exactly. For me, the last two DT's records were pretty meh, with the Astonishiting being the worst 'metal' album I have listened to in ages, so I've been waiting for this return to form.
