I used to not like rap until I took a poetry course and read Mary Oliver's A Poetry Handbook which breaks down the poetic form and explains how everything works. Everything from that book is applicable to good hip-hop (or i suppose bad hip-hop too since you can have bad poetry) so I started listening to rap on an intellectual level, the same way I appreciate and listen to the intricacies of jazz music. If I just want to zone out and listen to something without thinking I'll usually pick a different genre (although not always)

I'm mostly listening to stuff on my phone which doesn't scrobble these days, so my last.fm isn't very accurate anymore
