My all time favorite math teacher was a woman! I read some articles on the man vs woman math imbalance and it seems to be a little of both (the old nature vs. nurture debate). It seems girls tend to be a little more interested in math at younger ages but are pushed away mostly through traditional role expectations and peer pressure (women are traditionally more interested than men in their appearance after puberty, and math just doesn't "look cool"). Experts still estimate the natural imbalance to be around 60/40, but that is a long shot from the 85/15 that it currently is. Still for women that are good at math and understand its importance, that bodes very well for you and your future. Especially in a global culture that is increasingly socially aware of these imbalances with many corporations that hire accordingly.

As I was writing that it occurred to me that your education system was a little different. Thanks for the explanation. Liking math could really work in your favor should you continue to enjoy it. Less than 25% of all STEM jobs (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are held by women, and there is high global demand for women in these roles. These also are the disciplines in which the highest amount of innovation occurs. Math was by far my favorite subject in secondary (high) school. In 7th Grade (12-13 yrs old) I took advanced math, Algebra and Trigonometry to give you an idea. My skill in math has developed into a love for Economics, Systems design and Project Management now. I developed a passion for Behavioral Economics in graduate school and like to study that now, along with Systems thinking and complexity theory. Good to hear you are serious about school, it is a very important lesson I didn't learn until later in life.

Reading and watching movies in English will certainly help. You have very good English, even your syntax is pretty advanced. Depending on what direction you take in life, English can help you out a great deal. Germany is a huge trading partner and is a powerful business nation, and considering a large percentage of world business is done in the English language, you could have a leg up. The world is getting smaller and smaller as technology becomes greater. English is the adopted global language of international business, and most of the multinational corporations now require their employees to speak English. It is estimated that 25% of the world population now speaks the English language with some fluency (There is a good article about this at Harvard Business Review http://hbr.org/2012/05/global-business-speaks-english/ar/1). Anyway, enough about all that business stuff. So, you are in high school I assume? How are your studies? Do you have a favorite subject?

Of course! Take your time. I took French in 7th grade and speak enough to be dangerous now. I think I remember about 20 phrases and how to count to 100. My German isn't much better, but you speak WAY better English than I ever spake German! Yes, I too think it is interesting that America was almost a German speaking country. I would have been cool with that! It is true that if you don't use it before long it will fade. :(

True Farah, those are all things you need to consider in any major move you make. Overcoming fear is one of the greatest hurdles for most people, in any move they make, small or large. Your ability to face and over come your fears will in large part dictate how far you are able to go in chasing you dreams, and to some degree will even effect your ability to dream. Do you have specific future goals for yourself (career, earnings targets, etc.)? I have a Master's Degree in Business and do some career coaching here. These are important questions for you, whether or not you travel here, or anywhere. As for the German, my wife took German in school so we converse a little, but I am nowhere near as proficient as I was when I was in Germany and got to use it daily, and had German friends that I spent a lot of time with. Did you know when the American founding fathers voted on the official language for the USA that German lost out to English by one vote?

Not difficult, but I had the advantage of being shielded by the American military apparatus. So essentially I lived in America (on post) during the day and could visit Germany (off post) on evenings and weekends. I did try to get involved in the culture, took a course in the German language (but every German I met spoke much better English than I spoke German), even lived off post for awhile. Good luck on travelling here for school, it would be a great experience for you. There are a lot of ways you can do this. I have friends that have taken jobs in other countries and I have many friends from outside the US who have come here for school. One friend took a job in the Netherlands as a nanny just so she could experience another culture, and another is teaching English language in South Korea, even though she doesn't know the Korean language. So there are ways to "game" the system, just make sure you have the right kind of Visa. :) Cheers!

Like most Americans, military. :) Half of my family is from Germany so it was an historical experience for me as well (other half is from Norway, still have yet to experience your neighbor to the North). Fell in love with Germany though ... would love to go back some day, maybe even live for a few years.
