Thanks. Oh I was correct. Actually no it's actually a carved statue from Starved Rock Park in Illinois. I watched the movie last year and can't pinpoint the scene you're recalling. I never seen the sequels, not yet anyways. I'd like to check them out though.

Check out "God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail With It" by The Red Krayola. I can't guarantee that you'll like it, i find it fascinating. I've been wanting to check out Sparklehorse, did a little reading about the guy not too long ago. I'll give it a spin.

Just went to a screening of Inland Empire last night, made me think of when we saw it at the Music Box when first released. It was supposed to be Lynch’s new remaster but turned out just to be the dvd played on the big screen haha. The theatre lied. Still great though. Seen it a few times since it first came out and it’s grown on me a lot. Did you watch Twin Peaks the Return? Also, was thinking you and I saw Blue Velvet at the Gene Siskel Film Center back in the day too. My favorite movie :7)

Hey that's funny you say that, I thought about that a few weeks ago, somebody I know saw it in Chicago, so I was reminded of the time you and I went when it first came out. I haven't watched it in quite a while, I tried getting my gf to watch but turned out to be a failure. It's hard to find good people these days. I bought it when it came out on DVD and watched it with a buddy that enjoyed it so he bought it after seeing it with me. I was able to turn my gf onto blue velvet, I think she enjoyed it. Also she liked the original twin peaks so she wound up watching the return with me and we both enjoyed. I didn't quite know what was happening in it and it there was some deeper meaning somewhere hidden in there. I would like to watch it again. I also heard there had been talk of another continuing series which would be great. I will watch the return again though. Inland Empire is still one of my favorites of his though. Will there be a remaster as you mentioned?

Yep, the Inland Empire remaster is playing in theaters for next few months (WA and IL just ended though) and then sounds pretty likely they'll put the remaster out on Criterion blu-ray, which I'm looking forward to. Also! Lost Highway 4k remaster is coming out this month apparently. I think screenings are just scheduled in NYC so far but I'm sure that'll do a similar circuit. Remaster is being shown by Janus Films this time, so it's likely that that will also come out on a Criterion blu-ray soon. I loved The Return -- watched it very closely as it came out and worked out a hazy logic to it that I've kind of forgotten, even when I rewatched it. I have the two Twin Peaks books by Mark Frost that are pretty interesting and supposed to shed light on some of it, but I've only read bits and pieces. Watching Inland Empire made me wanna rewatch Mulholland Drive which is amazing but probably one of his that I've seen the least. A 4k re-release of that just came out on disc recently, too.

What’s yr take on Red Krayola? I go back n forth and usually not too into them, but I dig their debut, self-titled, and Mayo Thompson’s solo album ‘corky’s debt to his father’. I keep trying with them every now and then because they’re very close to a vibe I’m usually into. Mayo Thompson also produced The Fall’s Grotesque so he gets extra points for that.

I've been trying them out here and there over the years but didn't really click. I had an CD EP I bought also in the early 2000s because I saw John McEntires (of Tortoise) name credited as drummer. I didn't like it really at all was definitely interesting weird off beat drumming and an old man singing terribly I thought. Lately the last few years I've been trying Parable of Able and not really fully digging it. Last week I tried God Bless the Red Krayola and all that sail with it.. And that album was really good to me, very cool. I put a few more albums on I liked from the revival period and lost tapes and liked them pretty good too. Also that solo album is great as well. There is a quality in his voice that feels familiar to me, very exposed and frail sometimes. I'd like to check out more of the 70s stuff that he collaborates with another group but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've heard a small portion of their albums and they have a huge amount. Is there any time period or select few that you'd recommend as a good starting point?

God Bless I'm definitely warmer on than I used to be but that one hasn't hit as much w/me as I expected. Their singles record is great, and I really love the exposed feel of things. Not many tricks to hide behind, really counterintuitive approach to a band and pretty forward-thinking. I really love the band White Fence and the lead singer Tim Presley takes a lot of inspiration from Mayo, esp his solo record The Wink which I think is kind of great. I want to dig through more of the Krayola catalog because even when I don't like it, they're making bold choices and that keeps it interesting at least. Malefactor, Ade (one of their Drag City records) is one where I'm on the border between really not liking it and being drawn to it.

I just listened thru all the Fall's studio albums chronologically and there's definitely a bunch of different phases so a good entry point is tricky. My favorite is Perverted by Language (maybe), but I wasn't that into it at first. After listening through everything, I really really loved it. Bend Sinister is a great kind of underrated one where they're taking on a darker tone/atmosphere with some really great songs and a few goofy ones, that's the one that made me want to dig deep. Later period record The Unutterable is mostly really strong imo. This Nation's Saving Grace is the most common starter and I love it, but it's definitely more polished than something like the scrappy classics Grotesque or Dragnet. I'd say, Live at the Witch Trials or Hex for early sound, Bend Sinister for mid-period, The Unutterable for later sound. Totale's Turns is a really great live album, too, but maybe just for the already converted. Lo-fi and sloppy, tons of attitude.

In the last year I've really been digging the later SY: Sonic Nurse, Rather Ripped and The Eternal. I think my favorite are Goo and Confusion is Sex/Kill Yr Idols. I have great memories attached to the latter getting stoned at junior college and skipping classes with my buddy, and being super paranoid while listening to that intense but awesome album and going to taco bell, I try to listen to it sparingly to harbor the nostalgia of it. I think I like Sister better than Daydream but I still like Daydream quite a lot too. I started using soul seek as of lately and been able to find rare stuff that I've been trying to scrobble. I loved Tolly. He reminded me of Daniel Johnston slightly. The song about the bagels cracked me up today. Thanks for the suggestion.

I think you're right about all the albums keep growing to like more, basically all of them, I've come to enjoy more than ever before. The only 2 albums that I haven't returned to are Silver Sessions and SYR 4, which I will get around to eventually, and maybe Master Dik. Still have a couple I haven't listened to, I think in the SYR series, I'd like to check out soon.

What did you think of the new SY archival release, Out/in/out or whatever it was called? Also, I was gonna recommend an album: Stories by Tolly - Tolly. Open mic guy who I saw twice in Seattle as Tolly from Tallahassee. He did a song called ‘Monkey Mask’ as well as ‘Take Your Bagel and Get Out of My Car’ and my buddies and I were obsessed but hadn’t been able to find any info about him online since we saw him like 8 years ago. Just found out he self-released an album and I really love it, can finally hear Monkey Mask (My Friend Groucho) in full. Anyhow, I’d recommend it big time; he reminds me a little of John Prine or Michael Hurley style very loosely but has got his own thing going for sure. And I think it was recorded straight to laptop and/or during open mic performances so very low rent. Funny and thoughtful, pretty great.

I thought it was pretty decent for being a mostly instrumental album and fairly accessible to a casual listener. it's cool that they're still releasing albums. i read that they are looking to release a NYC ghost and flowers tour album, due to the fact they weren't as happy with the outcome of the studio. I'm going to have to listen to IN/OUT again sometime soon. I will also check out Tolly, never heard of him, but I found the album you mentioned on amazon music. Love me some folk music. what platform do you use for scrobbles?

That’s cool about NYC Ghosts. I like the mix on it pretty well but it’ll be interesting to hear the tour stuff. Love the sound of the first track on it especially. SYR 9 is alright, kind of like warmup jams with some great parts but nothing that moved me too much. Some piano throughout which you don’t often get from SY, I like that about it a fair amount. Lot of people comparing new one to that SYR 9 so wanted to finally give it a shot. For streaming I do Applemusic and then use last.fm app to scrobble. It’s not a perfect platform but I love that I can easily play stuff from my library that’s nowhere to be found on streaming, plus the sound quality is good.

I’m curious to hear what you think of Tolly. I think his stuff is pretty special — thoughtful and sometimes really funny. There’s also one great youtube video of him at an open mic that I found listed under Tolly Dancing Cats. My buddy and I have been quoting a couple of his songs for the past 8 years having only heard them once or twice so I was v happy to find it. Really bad cover art and the mixing is zero budget but I don’t even care. Not sure if it holds any outside appeal though

I haven't heard the latest Jeff Parker album so I will put that on my list. I'd say Tortoise really stepped up when Jeff joined however the first two releases before him are my favorites and TNT with him. Standards and it's all around you are pretty awesome. The other ones are fun but haven't sunk in yet, I need to check them out more. I'd suggest Isotope 217, only 4 releases, 3 full length and the commander mindfuck ep. Chicago underground quartet is a beautiful album with Jeff on it too. There is a lot of side projects I haven't listened too some I have.

Lots of Tortoise on your scobbles. Happy 2021 on Last FM. We are still here. Last FM is one of my favorite sites because of how low key it is now. I also like seeing my listening habits and looking back through the years. I wish I had my original account merged with this one so I could have my old scrobbles from high school on here. You can really get an interesting insight looking back through your years of scrobbles and remembering where you were at with some of the reports.

TG is great. Based on that, I’d recommend early Severed Heads, especially Clean (deluxe edition) and City Slab Horror. Love those ones. Osees record Metamorphosed from a few months back is really great. Also been listening to a lot of drone/ambient guitar stuff from Bill Nace, ‘Both’ especially. I also love the 2nd Body/Head record he did w/Kim Gordon, ‘The Switch’. And would recommend this new weird one called Leap Second by M Caye Castagnetti. Kinda unclassifiable, but psychedelic songs w/Morricone-like touches and great atmosphere. Really good stuff.

Yea. The Japanese name is the Zelda soundtrack. I have had some problems with last fm since my computer cannot use the most recent version. I have to use the old one and its always crashing and telling me to update so a lot of times it does not scrobble but I try to use it most of the time.

Yeah Trans is pretty electronic, but Old Ways is great and Everybody's Rockin' is fun. Not too sure about the later 80s (Life and Landing on Water). My personal favorite Neil album, however, is Harvest Moon. In my opinion, it's better than the original.
