I've heard good things about Spotify but I just don't feel the need to start using it. I never seem have trouble finding new music. I don't look for new music 24/7 likeI used to because I've found most of what I would like and I feel like anything coming out soon that I haven't heard I have heard buzz about so I know where to look.

I understand the need for variety but Seether is like on Nickelback's level of "ew," it just strikes me as uninspired. I've been into mostly solo guitar work, individual guitarists and jazz fusion, progressive death metal/deathcore and some Electronica here and some hip-hop there. I like to consider my self an ever evolving form of the same musical pallette. I don't expand my horizons too often because I believe I have found my niche. But I will admit like I said death metal has become pretty stale to me. I don't have as much unarticulated aggression. That's why I feel that music that expresses emotion and intelligence through complexity are more important than raw anger.

I just saw AAL and the tour dates have been announced for a while, they're touring with BTBAM and Tesseract.

It was received as a flop across the board. It felt like it had no passion of or "oomph!" I am into some tech death but this felt water down. Check out the album "Ohmnivalent" by Anomalous if you want good modern tech death. I am also highly partial to Last Chance to Reason's "Level 2."

Also check out Amogh Symphony, it's a solo project. The album is called "Abolishing the Obsolete System." It's like a combination of psytrance (Infected Mushroom) and technical death metal with middle eastern themes.

Yeah, they're definitely a lot more than just Technical Death Metal. There's very heavy atmospheric elements to their music, as well as Black and Doom metal touches. Like I said, it's something completely new. It also depends on which album you're listening to, Seepia is the only one I would say is anywhere near the aforementioned genre. The absolutely ridiculous thing about these guys is their music is so complicated it sounds like they might have just hit record and played random shit, when in reality you'll notice riffs repeat and tie together EXACTLY how they were played before. They also play everything live note-for-note.

Check out Animals as Leaders, Lye by Mistake (particuarly the album "Fea Jur"), Scale the Summit (the album "Carving Desert Canyons") and the 2009 demo from the child prodigy group Chon.

It's just hidden behind such unconventional-writing and riffing styles and gritty production that most people just shrug it off because it's not what they're used to. I'm just really picky about my Death Metal, I'm constantly searching for bands like Portal, Gorguts, Mithras and Stargazer but to no avail because the goal to take Technical Death Metal to new and innovative lengths seems to be a rather uncommon one. I strongly recommend you give those bands a listen if you haven't already, especially Portal if you're into giving an album up to 10 listens to really fully grasp it as you mentioned.

Not a problem. It's certainly equally as interesting to hear it from your side as well. It's funny, I have friends that hate Ob(Servant) purely because it's less technical. I definitely enjoy Technical Death Metal quite a bit, as I listen to some REALLY technical bands. The thing is, I feel like most bands don't really do anything unique with the technicality, you know? For example, Portal is hands-down the most technical band I've ever heard their album Seepia absolutely blows my mind. But, along with being the most technical they're also the most unique and innovative band I've found in the scene to date. Not a single band like them. I was instantly obsessed with them from the first listen, but I had to listen to Seepia on headphones about 10 times before I could even grasp what was really going on. But once I could, I was 10 times as blown away as I was in the beginning.

Listening to Black Metal and Doom Metal really helped me with this valuable epiphany. So many bands of these genres have managed to do so much with so little. They focus on atmosphere and dynamics, rather than ridiculous technique and wanking. I could listen to a Burzum song with 5 chords and be more moved than any Faceless song would ever move me. Black Metal also taught me that intentional underproduction can make an album sound absolutely incredible. Gritty, raw, biting and real. It can create such an incredible atmosphere that so much Death Metal lacks. Many of these bands also incorporate ambient elements or even full compositions that are amazing as well. Anyone could play them, but few could compose them. Portal is an example of a ray of hope among clouds of shit, one of the very few bands that's allowed me to keep my faith in modern Death Metal. Phew... there's my rant.

Technical Death Metal is especially horrid. There are some absolutely INCREDIBLE bands within this genre that have managed to meld amazingly tasteful technicality with innovative song structures, incredibly unique guitar tones, interesting and creative lyrical themes, wonderfully innovative vocals and drumming, and even tasteful bits and pieces of influence from other genres. The problem is these bands are buried in seas of shit. Psycroptic, The Faceless, Obscura, Spawn of Possession, Brain Drill, and Viraemia are perfect examples of this. Bands that cram 50 overly-technical riffs into each minute, produce the fuck out of it, and make people shit their pants in awe for some reason. All people care about is technicality and technique. Sure, it requires a lot of skill to play but I don't give a shit, that's not what matters. They've just taken what was done in the 90's, made it less memorable and more technical, turned it to plastic and taken all of it's potency. That's why I hate it.

So much of it is all the same. There must be hundreds of bands that form every month that are making the same exact music as all of the other clones of clones of more clones that are formed every other month. Everything about these bands, from the musical style to the influences, the cover art, band name, guitar tone, production quality and even the logo are all exactly the same. It's all totally half-assed as far as innovation goes. The production quality is pure over-produced plastic, the lyrical themes are all the same, the guitar sounds exactly like every other band, and the drums are often as triggered and over-produced as possible. Most modern Death Metal just doesn't move me at all in the way that most Death Metal from the 90's and early 00's, Black Metal, Ambient music, Classical, some Progressive Rock and Doom metal have the ability to. All bands care about today is ridiculous and poorly written over-technicality and musicianship.

Have you heard of Animals as Leaders? You need to check out their debut. It's instrumental progressive metal. It's downright incredible. Tosin Abasi is one of my new favorite guitarists.

They have two albums, "Fea Jur" and "Arrangements for Fulminating Vective," the one I recommended came out this year and unlike the first album is instrumental. Amazing production. Epic guitar. My new favorite guitar player over Muhammed.

Well, let's just say I've found a band that I'm deeply in love with. You've never heard them so take into consideration that they're very out there and an acquired taste. They blend so many styles of music that it will make your head spin, they're also relatively progressive. They started with a vocalist and were a mathcore/jazz fusion band and now they're more of a prog metal/jazz fusion band. Think Meshuggah meets Steve Vai meets intricate clean jazz passages. Some weird combinations. Some awkward Buckethead style parts and some very epic metal in between. It's easily one of my top 3 albums of the year. It's called "Fea Jur" by the group Lye By Mistake.

Not a whole lot, just same old. Playing on my laptop, going through music, watching MMA, the usual. Getting ready to start my sophomore year, going to take some classes on Criminal Justic, Middle Eastern History, Native American Culture as well as Introduction to Law.

Well, re-discovered, I suppose. I saw them like a year and a half ago on Letterman, thought "wow, they rock," and then completely forgot about them until I heard their new track "I've Got Friends." Dude's voice is awesome. And yeah, thanks for the MGMT recommendation anyways. "Kids" has got to be one of the best songs I've heard in the past year. Though, I've been without a computer for so long... But mainly I hear about new music by listings to Sirius radio.

I finally have good internet for starters. I am considering going into Psychiatry, so I got a lot to consider. Medical school is a daunting mother-fucking task. Music, School, MMA, Games, the usual I guess. I'm just in my "mode," you know? Right now it's all about good grades and keeping my mind active. I want to always be thinking about something or figuring something out. I have began to get more into philosophy and interpretations of physics (specifically quantum mechanics), I am beginning to realize how far I have to go and how much I have to learn, at first I was like "wow, I feel like a dumbass" but acknowleding where you are in the process of understanding something is all part of that process. It's amazing how much you can really surprise yourself at how easy it is to comprehend something for you or me (such as IT and what not) and for others... it is rocket science. It's perplexing. Sorry for the rant. Take it easy bro.
