I'm just not hearing the whole, and you didn't say this, how can I even talk about pop music when I don't listen to it. Well either they mean music that is popular, which I can easily give examples of what I do listen to, or music that relies on hooks, choruses, verses, which I can also easily give examples of. And even in that case, if what they mean is "popular on the radio" or "popular on MTV" I'm afraid to tell them that EVERYONE knows what that sounds like because it's so difficult to avoid.
