"i feel cliche or even hamfisted lyrics are common in a lot of good music with a "goth" aesthetic, but some good wordplay would've helped her more" I think that is entirely accurate. It seems like Chelsea's strength is her instrumentation and mixing, whereas the lyricism is just mediocre. Though I think in general when it comes to writing a gothic song things can get pretty weird. Like you said, it really is ham-fisted. So maybe if she didn't make songs where the lyrics stand out so much - and instead focus on her instrumentation and mixing - it would be better overall.

Finally got around to listening to the new Chelsea Wolfe album. I liked it a lot. Some of the tracks were heavy as hell, and she managed to keep it interesting throughout the album. Some of the tracks didn't really stand out as much; I didn't really like 'Color of Blood' (at least I think that's the one I have in mind) for example. But overall I thought it was a great release and it's probably my favorite of the year so far.

sorry for taking so long to reply. I gave The Unnatural World a try, and I don't know yet if I like it or not. Its seems "darker", maybe sadder, than Deathconsciousness in my opinion. I see what you mean when you said is a bunch of tracks, it doesn't feel like the songs are connected to each other. I still have to listen to it some more times to actually come with a "veredict", but I think it will take some time. I just got into The Microphones' Mount Eerie, and holy fuck, it's awesome. Ever heard them?

Aye, I used to listen to a lot of heavy funeral doom before I moved on to more modest experimental stuff. I really like heavy instrumentation when it's done well, so I reckon I'll like Chelsea's new album a fair bit.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about Viet Cong. I liked that album; I should listen to it again. I haven't heard the Chelsea Wolfe album yet, but I listened to her pre-release singles. I loved Carrion Flowers. I wouldn't be surprised if that becomes my AOTYSF.

Meh, honestly nothing from this year has really caught my ear yet. There's been some alright stuff, but nothing yet that I was particularly impressed by. So I suppose I'm still waiting for my AOTY 2015. How about you?

Yeah, it's worth the listen. It was different than what I was expecting - in a good way. And it's short.
