I would try to track down the death metal rec chart, I hear that its one of the best genre rec charts on mu. As for death metal I like; Portal is amazing and represents a new shift in the death metal sound, they are black metal influenced and as such sorta atospheric and creepy as shit. If you want old-school driving death metal one of my personal favorites is Bolt Thrower, don't be thrown of by them being a WH40K band they rise above their idiotic subject matter (not that many death metal bands have intelegent subject matter, or that you could tell with growled vocals). Also for old-school try Dismember - Like an Everflowing Stream. To get a sense of technical DM try Gorguts - Obscura and Atheist - Unquestionable Presence these are both fun albums but I personally like Gorguts more. I know fucking nothing about melodeath or slam so I can't rec you much there but if you want some non-portal style death/black try Goatwhore, they use some recycled Acid-Bath riffs and ex-members.
