TTGL is a mecha, but it's not your typical mecha anime. It's fucking awesome. The final episodes are mindblowing. As for Welcome to the NHK, it's no where close to TTGL or CB. It deals with a hikikomori named Satou. It's a very dark comedy, dealing with stuff like suicide and other dark subject matter.

I'd say Cowboy Bebop (of course), TTGL, Azumanga Daioh, GTO, Welcome to the NHK, Detroit Metal City, and Akira. Those one's really jumped out to me. And it's funny, I probably cried the hardest while watching Cowboy Bebop, TTGL, and Welcome to the NHK. The ending of CB and TTGL are bawwwww-tastic.

I think Voltaic would make a good start - that way you get an idea of her latest (& brilliant!) work as well as having the "greatest hits" effect without giving away the studio versions wich make the characteristics of every album. I myself got really into Björk with the Royal Opera DVD (not the Vespertine songs though at first, more like All Is Full Of Love, Hyperballd, Jóga, Human Behaviour, ... - but it also got me into the "more difficult stuff", An Echo, A Stain is my favourite now). My favourite Album would be Medúlla - simply the greatest! "best" is always hard to say....

You asked what album is Björk's best - Well, the general dispute is whether it's Vespertine or Homogenic, but I find Medúlla to be one of her best, alongside Vespertine. Medúlla is more experimental, and even avant-garde, than her other records ;)
