most of my listening comes from passive listening, but it still counts. listening is listening no matter the circumstance, because i still get alot of enjoyment and fun out of passive listening. very interesting library aswell, i found you through exploring the ambient section of this website. i only found this genre recently and ive taken a good interest into it

Happy 16th scrobbling anniversary today! ... How fast time passed by playing your 151k scrobbles, or? ... May you be blessed with many such musical cake days, and even more hidden, musical discoveries in the years to come, Lysander

Time flies fast with our hobbies :-) I guess you also stay at home more lately in these COVID-19 disease times, same as us here in the German side of the EU. One side effect is that I can now listen more music. I will list later my "mix of the week" on spotify (which comes out every Monday), right now enjoying jazz music. What's on your musical agenda for today?

Oh that's weird. That it doesn't go to the 2004 year. I had my first account in 2010, but this account my first scrobbles if I like try to do a statistic chart with last.fm bot, or even on here it does not show the time, it puts the songs I scrobbled the first year in 2011 to like 1970 for some reason, it's weird. lol

True I have over 5000. Hildegard von Bingen, I haven't heard her music and don't know much about her, sorry. But I'll check it out. Lol this year I have most scrobbles of Mariah Carey, also from my artist she is an anomaly, I listen mostly to metal, but I fucking love Mariah's vocals, she is perfect.

I am only 1x in there ... nice to meet you

Hi, nice to meet you too. My musical journey matured through exposure to different subgenres and in some cases different cultures. I started my scrobbling listening to neoclassical and gothic metal. Some important artists that led to my discovering new subgenres were Raison d'etre [dark ambient], Vas [Middle Eastern/neoclassical darkwave] and Deathspell Omega [black metal]. Going to the Middle East generated an interest in Middle Eastern classical/folk music and I went from being a music journalist to getting involved in academia [ethnomusicology]. I've taken a look at your profiles and they are fascinating. I'm interested in the track called "when youtube disables their old data API". I'm currently researching software and its influence on musical content. I've noticed you have some quartertones in that piano piece. How were you able to achieve that?

It's great to have a music journalist/academics such as you here on board :-) ... Too bad lastfm doesn't offer groups anymore (there were quite some subscribers to the musicology group)... About my music: for some of my tracks I use self-made software to introduce random elements (e.g. tones being random). The motivation here for me is: not to make usual music patterns (e.g. someone described my music once after hearing as: "breaking and reassembling music - through techniques which aren't confined by the sounds within the music itself" (A) ). I also fingerprint my tracks and compare them in an online catalogue, and it's quite unique :-) ...

lastfm only allows 1000 chars, so: ... About your research and also the software you found so far, is there some info (e.g. unusual results) already how (and why) they influenced music? I am also open for links for further reading... About the cultures you mentioned influencing you, I wonder if one could map this (3D) and see some behaviour patterns, e.g. the location of that culture/people is here and there, and then you add the tracks, genres you listened to and see something from that?... Best autotune box in the biz! Sorry, I'm being cynical. Always like her voice. Saw them once back in 2006 I think it was? Back when they were still pretty much in their prime. Very good experience. To be honest I have a soft spot for them, seeing as Fallen is such an important album.

It's a landmark album in Gothic rock/metal. It made the genre accessible to many and got a lot of listeners into female-fronted metal. It's also packed with excellent songs. There was a furor about it when it came out, along the lines that GM was now becoming mainstream, but it was undoubtedly a great piece of work brought about by Sony monetising the Gothic trend of the late 90s/early 2000s.

Cadaveria has been shit ever since their third album. I care not for Opera IX apart from some of the very old stuff. Well, I will maybe check it out. But I don't hold up much hope. Not many girly screamers really do it for me, i think they need to sound sufficiently demonic, twisted and feminine [example, Runhild Gammelsæter], and that's not an easy balance to strike, since so many of them focus on sounding masculine [there is a world of issues one can take with that comment, but it's nearly 2am and I don't care].

Lol, I love your honesty. I have a feeling you won't like new Opera IX, its just recycled material. Runhild is great, but not many of her unfortunately. Is it weird I am getting tired of going to metal shows? The crowds seem to be getting worse and worse. I was at a Lacuna Coil/Epica show last night. Neither of those bands do it for me, but it's always nice when I heard LC play Heaven's a Lie live. I am going to see Evanescence/Amy Lee in December with a live orchestra, should be fun as I have never seen Amy Lee live.

I don't think it's weird that you're getting tired of going to metal shows if you're seeing the same old bands who aren't doing anything interesting any more, which neither LC nor Epica are. The only shows I have been going to recently are folk/black metal, which is a lot of fun. Having said that, I went to Battle Beast earlier this year which was surprisingly awesome and Fates Warning which was, as always, excellent. I also have tickets for WASP in October [of course]. Maybe you need to go to a couple of wild card shows. Try something different and/or something heavier.

Which Battle Beast album do you recommend? That lead singer's voice is incredible, I have not heard of them before. And I very much love stuff like that - old Warlock, Znowhite, Chastain, etc... I actually have been going to some pop shows lately. The crowds are much better. I saw Michelle Branch a few weeks ago, it was a nice re-visit to my childhood. Black Metal bands don't really come to Canada.

It's good to mix it up. I would love to go to a pop show actually. Never even considered doing it. I would love to see Paramore live - well it's pop rock - their tickets are fucking expensive though and normally sell out within a few minutes, I would have thought. As for BB, I really do not know their material well enough, and purely enjoyed their live performance, which is excellent. I suppose one can only go with their self-titled, though to be honest their most recent has been getting good feedback too, and presumably that's what they were playing most numbers from in their live set.

Yeah, pop show I went to was great. I can never get a chance to go to see Paramore live because tickets sell out within a few minutes. It sucks. Chelsea Wolfe is playing here in Toronto next month, what do you think of her? I will definitely check out Battle Beast live, they are coming to Canada soon. By the way, I know you do not like Arch Enemy. But Alissa actually sings with clean vocals on one song (Reason to Believe), and I think she sounds so good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQM8Nf2w3lQ . Her screams are awful but her clean vocals are actually good. Do not know why its not utilized more.

Indeed - the FVNERALS reminds me of a milder Ava Inferi in the instrumentation and the atmosphere, not in the vocals so much. And I really need to give Ugasanie more time than I have, I've only dipped in and out of it, but it so far sounds like a stalwart to add to the Arctic ambient sub-sub-subzero genre along with Thomas Koner and SRF. A nice 'antidote' to the summer for those with occasional SSAD!

http://steamcommunity.com/id/sensuki I saved my data so that if I want to look up something I listened to I probably can (haven't had a look at the files yet). But yeah I still listen to most of the stuff I used to, I just thought it would be cool to shake it up because it would probably take a long time for any more recent stuff to even show in the top artists or top songs charts on my profile or whatever.

Yeah well Windows Live is dead and most people I know just use phone apps now (which I don't) so I don't have skype logged on. I'm usually logged into steam because a few of my friends use that. Thought I'd do a last.fm reset and start logging it again, as the old one isn't really representative of my current taste (I did request a database backup of it though).

The alternative version of Elan is MUCH MUCH better than the original... and Sagan is ok but the lyrics are so cringeworthy... "Listening to Sagan, Dreaming Carl Sagan", i'm glad it's a bonus track. Still, Floor, is and will continue to be the best thing to happen to Nightwish for me. From reviews I have read, the new album is Nightwish's best work yet excluding the single releases. I even read that Floor growls in some of the songs - which is a plus for me. Apocryphos is great for night listening... puts me into an instant coma (in a good way). Have you heard the new Lucid Fly? It's SO AMAZING. Stasis is the name of the new EP... I have a copy for you, and can send it to you if you want.
