Thoughts on the classic Sonic games? We had both Sonic Mega and Gems Collection, so I grew up on, and loved, all of them. A few months back, I went to my cousin's house and beat Sonic 1 for the first time in my life (as a kid, I would inevitably die on the second zone and then just cheat code my way through the rest lolol). A few days ago, I played through Sonic 2 also, so I'm looking forward to 3 & Knuckles in the future. Also, unrelated, but saw you're a pretty big De La Soul fan—I've finally been diving into them; 3 Feet High and Buhloone Mindstate are dope.

Love 'em! I love Mania and Superstars too! Hell, I even love Knuckles Chaotix, which everyone else seems to hate, haha. De La Soul are amazing! They were my gateway into hip-hop, 3 Feet High was just mind-blowing. The first 4 albums are all masterpieces in my book.

Chaotix wasn't in Gems, sadly (even tho it had obscure stuff like Tails' Skypatrol lol), so I looked up a longplay; the visuals are ♥, but the levels seemed sparse, at times both puzzle platformer and hop-and-bop. Not sure about the ring mechanics, but I feel I'm less gimmick-phobic than many, so I'd be willing to try it... also, those bonus stages were cool, esp the one that was a three-way mix of Sonic 2 and CD's bonus rounds w/ Blue Spheres. Since you bring up having minority opinions, that bonus game reminded me of Saturn attempts at 3D Sonic; I always thought that the cancelled Sonic X-Treme looked SO cool, but the fish-eye lens wasn't for everyone (shame about what the devs went through, tho). Sonic Jam also had potential—there was a brief snippet included for a video in Mega Collection's extras menu (https://youtu.be/g-Oc49n7kVc), which I watched with wonder as a youth... so imagine the disappointment when I found out that it was only an overworld, not a full game... I love early 3D, so it's no surprise that I love the Saturn Sonic games! I do wonder what it would have been like if Adventure had released on the system. Oh and if you're into SEGA and hip-hop (and lots of other 90s nerd stuff!) you have to check out this track by Del the Funky Homosapien https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZJQFXvgQ_s&pp=ygUnZGVsIHRoYSBmdW5rZWUgaG9tb3NhcGllbiBwcm90byBjdWx0dXJl

I've been listening to a lot of classic boom bap recently, and keep seeing you on the top of the 'listeners you know' section on the artist pages (good taste), but man, I can't believe the one prominent Gang Starr record you haven't scrobbled is Daily Operation, that's their best one...

Wow, I haven't listened to them in so long I can't remember why I never scrobbled that one, haha. And Merry Christmas to you too!

So Saisei is dope, it's a label run by Junki Inoue (cool dude btw) and it's releasing a bunch of old japanese techno releases. Suzukiski remasters, a Transonic comp is releasing, and what not. Dude is super passionate and knowledgeable about old 90s japanese techno, also Sky-Scraul-Space (Movie's 1992-1995)

I've got a question - I've heard that the original Xbox was seen as a kind of spiritual successor to the Dreamcast (no need to list off all the Sega exclusives here), so do you have a feeling for whether most of the Sega community merged into the Xbox faction for that generation or if it was evenly split between the three emerging camps? (I'm guessing the answer would vary by region since it doesn't seem like the Xbox made much of a dent in Europe and Japan)

hmm, if my twitter feed is anything to go by, most do seem to have gone to Xbox. Everyone seems to love Shenmue and JSR and also Halo, haha. Personally I bought a GameCube and then a PS2, didn't get an Xbox myself until way later. God, that was such a great console generation!

Yay, I love it when my crackpot hypotheses are validated! And yes!! The only thing that would've made that gen even cooler (despite being more of a headache for gamers) was if Sega wasn't bleeding to death and the DC stuck out a few more months for the Xbox launch, so that there could've been a brief window with all four on the market haha. But coming back to reality, considering the close relationship Sega and Microsoft seem to have had then, might it be reasonable to assume that the DC discontinuation/Xbox release dates were planned so as not to coincide? (Another Sega nut recently enlightened me on the "Compatible with Windows CE" connection, and I have also heard that Mr. Bernie Stolar himself favoured being sold to Microsoft.) Oh and by the way, since you probably have a lot of esoteric DC knowledge, know off hand any interesting or unique Japan-only DC games worth checking out? There are so many obscure ones that don't even have English wikipedia pages lol...

No, but GameCube ports work too; I will never forgive my very young self for allowing my family and I to misplace our copy of Sonic Gems Collection, which included Sonic CD (not to mention the Saturn gem Sonic R and arcade curio Sonic the Fighters). Though, I'm glad we still have our original copy of Sonic Mega Collection, which came with the opening and ending film of Sonic CD. I watched those a million times as a kid! :D Those two collections also came with non-Sonic Mega Drive extras; Ristar, and Vectorman 1 and 2. The former is a sadly forgotten gem, and while I can't recall Vectorman much, I do remember also enjoying those as well.

Nice to see someone else who appreciates Sonic R! Once you get the hang of the controls it's a real underrated gem. I've been playing Ristar a lot on my Switch lately, I've played it a little bit before but this is my first time actually sitting down and trying to beat it and I love it :D

If you can't live the life you want, want the life you're living. How's that for some motivational-ass shit?!? LOL But seriously though, I completely empathize. However I'm sure 20-30 years from now, people will be looking back at this era, wanting to be all up in whatever's going on right now. It's like that with every era, I think.

I'm not on Twitter ATM. Seems like some groups have migrated to Facebook with some success as well. I pretty much hang out on that forum I PMed you about a couple of months ago. We got a decent little community going. I can send you the link again of you're interested. Take care man and Happy New Year!

twilight princess was shit, because it was a shit game, not because it was "literally a retreading of the more EBIN ocarina in timez!1" stylistically it was huge step down, the tutorial was long as balls, the poly starved models where downright laughable, i personally blame aonuma

It seems like there's no inspiration on Nintendo, no ideas, something to innovate, just one day, a Nin fan enraged me like the weeabo he is on a convention in Santiago, i remember he said: "Nintendo is popular, everyone loves it and it's gonna be forever (translated from Spanish), i had many arguments to contradict him, i won and he enraged me, insulting me and trying to kick me, such a chauvinist pig, then the guards kicked him out forever.

Shit, now Nintendo's games on mobile devices but "free", that's not profitable, They're doomed and close to bankrupt on the Stock Exchange.

I have just the thing for you. https://userstyles.org/users/155937 A couple of different userstyles which, amongst other things kill the round avatars (which, for the record annoy the shit out of me as well!). There's also the "cover photo" one which allows you to replace the stupid top banner with your own.
