Nice! It took me awhile to warm up to it for some reason. I dig it now.

I certainly did, I love post-modern jazz. It's a shame that jazz in all it's forms seems to have become a niche market in Britain. In fact if you talk to the average Brit about jazz & they automatically assume you are talking about trad jazz & seem perplexed if you point out there are as many different styles of jazz as there are of, say pop! But I will certainly be looking out for more 3ology. Keep up the good work!

Hi JPdrumming, thanks for the shout. I saw on your mypage page a message from Jan Kopinski, who I've played with. We both played with the drummer Steve Harris, who was a demon with Jan's Pinski Zoo. Steve died a year or so ago. He really turned me on to drumming, from John Lee Hookers foot, to Elvin.

Wow...let's see... Sorry this is going to be a little long, ha. As I see it, the Roots have 3 career phases, and I think it's hard to distinguish between albums within each phase. Illadelph Halflife & Do You Want More? are old school, and are probably my faves. They have the most identity to me as albums. But all of their other stuff is good, too--except for the live album, Roots Come Alive--the only one I don't like. The next 3 albums after that started using samples rather than being purely live so they have a certain vibe. The last two albums, Rising Down & Game Theory are also great, but again have their own kind of sound. If you're looking for some good ?uestlove drummin' check out The Philadelphia Experiment...I think you might already have that (?) ...can't remember.

Haha. Yeah, I had to learn it for a performance for someone's recital class. Speaking of which... Story time! So we ended up not being able to get any rehearsal time for this performance. We were also playing some Rush stuff and a Dick Dale tune. And then we get to the class, and we've never played together in our lives, and to make matters more interesting, the bass player doesn't show up. We're waiting around, and we let another group go first. Still no bass player, and he won't answer his phone. A friend randomly calls me and I answer--we're not doing anything in the class at this point--well he happens to be a bass player, so I ask him to come over, and he makes it there just as the other group finishes playing. So he was up there with this giant chart for YYZ, sight reading everything on the fly and we're watching for all kinds of cues--it was the most absurd situation. Somehow we survived without any trainwrecks. I don't know how, though. It was insane. Anyway, what's new?

Hi Jon, saw you just listened to the Boy -Girl Band disc I did a few years ago and caught your shout. i'm not very active in Denver/Boulder these days as I run the studio here at UNC and hardly ever seem to leave town anymore... I was extremely active in the jazz and downtown art rock scenes in the late 70s through the 80s though having worked w/ Rare Silk for 10 yrs and Bruce Odland's band, Thinking Plague, Legacy of Sorrow, Jill Sobule, etc.

Thanks for the overwhelming response! My sympathy for Denver has been there (in the backhead!) since I read Kerouacs "On The Road" 20 years ago, and I never had a reason to doubt it. haha. yeah, i'm actually the #2 weather report listener on last.fm! i don't even really like them that much overall... but i have found a new respect and understanding for them that i wouldn't have had otherwise.

I got that Medeski album because Jojo Mayer played on some of the tracks. Haven't dug into it much though. I'll dig through my Meshell at home and let you know.
