:-) mneptunius

It seems I haven't found too much more than I already mentioned for avant-garde aside from Code, AIHVHIA, and Transcending Bizarre?. I may have a few more agm bands to recommend in a few days, though, cuz I recently found a BUNCH of free downloads from avant-garde black metal bands and a whole lot of other stuff. For prog, there's plenty of stuff; 7for4, Charts and Maps, CHON, Fair to Midland, The Flower Kings, Rishloo, Frost*, Canvas Solaris, Cronian, Ever Forthright, In Vain, Indukti, Means End, Obsidian Kingdom (they're a recent favorite, definitely check them out), The Ocean (another favorite), Persefone, Protest the Hero, The Safety Fire, Sky Sanctuary, Skyharbor, Uneven Structure, and vildhjarta. That's just looking at my windows media player; I'm sure there;s more to be found in my library, but fr now I hope this'll do!

Ahh, that makes sense; they really do stack a ton of different melodies and whatnot on top of each other, which can be good to some and bad to others. And Beardfish is my all-time favorite prog rock band. Personally, I think every album is just brilliant (even their pre-label ones), so if you wanna check em out there're plenty of places to start. My favorites are Destined Solitaire, Mammoth, The Void (their newest album, released last year), and I suppose the Sleeping in Traffic duo also deserves an honorable mention. So ya, if you want some top-notch prog rock, definitely try em out. Good mix of classic prog, modern prog, and their own stylistic touches.

I love NeO, but I can see how the extremely long songs could wear on for some people. I takes a few listens to really pick out all the stuff that's going on, just cuz there's so much happening all throughout it. I'd say it's worth at least a couple listens before you come to a conclusion. I could understand if it still didn't shine out too much after that, though.

Well, as a huge Leprous fan, there is one unfortunate truth I should tell you; there's nothin out there quite like Leprous. HOWEVER, fret not, for there's plenty of stuff that's equally awesome. I saw that you were listening to Shaolin Death Squad, but there's also Haken, Hypno5e, and (especially) Ne Obliviscaris to check out for some quality prog metal that's truly fantastic. The best way I'd suggest finding stuff like Leprous is to look into the experimental prog, 'avant-prog,' and 'extreme prog' styles; you could start there with stuff like Ihsahn, Loch Vostok, Persefone, Winds, In Vain, Frantic Bleep, Orkenkjott, Vulture Industries, Indukti, Eternal Deformity, Age of Silence, Dark Suns, Wolverine, To-Mera, Worm Ouroboros, and Secret Chiefs 3. Another good thing to look for is bands that sorta blur the line between prog rock and prog metal; bands like Haken where people are usually split as to whether they're rock or metal. Just somethin to look for in tags.

I'm not too sure how these'll mix with your tastes, but my go-to recommendations for avant-garde are usually Mirrothrone, Thy Catafalque, Akphaezya, Unexpect, Sigh, Ephel Duath, maudlin of the Well, Kayo Dot, Le Grand Guignol, Shining (the one from Norway, not the Swedish one), Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Alamaailman Vasarat, Estradasphere, Tartar Lamb, John Zorn (and any of his projects like Painkiller and Naked City), and Subterranean Masquerade. For prog, it's a bit tougher to recommend; do you want prog metal, prog rock, or just a mix of both?
