So I just finished reading My Dark Vanessa. The topic of the book didn't trigger me because I figured reading it couldn't be worse than living it. But I wasn't prepared for how "seen" I felt. The accuracy and overlap between my abuse and the way I felt about him and the main character in the book was spot on. It really made me see the grooming that I went through in a different light. But it also made me have some new revelations. Like seeing the way she would disassociate every time they had sex made me realize I did the same. It was in a different way than the character, more numbing than escaping, but it was something I didn't realize until I read this book. Which made me realize I didn't "consent" as much as I thought I did. I finished the book last night and have been struggling with processing the things it's brought up for me.
