Yeah, the ending is what threw me off when I first saw it... now I like the ending conceptually, but I'm not convinced that it "works" ultimately in the film. Not to mention the fact that I saw it nearly a decade ago, so my frame of reference was significantly different at the time! I've never listened to Seahaven. I'll look them up!

Yeah, Spring Breakers is great. I've seen it three times. It's hilarious and fascinating to watch multiplex audiences reacting to a Korine film.

I liked the film but I thought it felt very restrained in comparison to the novel. Selby's novel grabbed me by the throat and shook me. The film didn't linger with me in the same way. I liked the visual style a lot, though. It felt like a bleak rendition of '50s melodrama... Nicholas Ray meets Larry Clark.

Hey man! Honestly, Stephen King's Danse Macabre would be a really good starting point. He analyses the history of horror in literature and film. I'd also recommend Barbara Creed's The Monstrous Feminine: Film, Feminism, Psychoanalysis. Steve Neale's Genre and Hollywood is a good overview of Hollywood genre films, with a pretty awesome section on horror. I hope that helps! Let me know if you were looking for something different.

Awesome. I was pleased to see your five star rating. Last Exit is a more sprawling, expansive novel (although it's around the same page length). You'll have to let me know what you think of it. The Room is an even more disturbingly intimate book than The Demon. I'd recommend that one as well.

Hey man. The only book on Kubrick that I've read from beginning to end is Stanley Kubrick, Director (by Ulrich Ruchti, Sybil Taylor and Alexander Walker). It's pretty good. It's definitely an extensive book. It has a (mostly visual) analysis of every feature film in his filmography. It was one of the sources for my essay on The Shining. Hope that helps!

I was somewhat indifferent to Cujo when I saw it. I know King is a big fan of the adaptation, though. You really liked it, right?

Glad you enjoyed Cujo. Apparently King wrote it during the most intense period of his cocaine addiction--in his book On Writing, he says he was so high while writing it that he literally doesn't remember the process. He is very fond of the novel, though. As for books on Brando... I think Lawrence Grobel is a very good interviewer/journalist. I'd highly recommend his book called Conversations with Brando. As for biographies, I really enjoyed Stefan Kanfer's Somebody. And Brando's autobiography (Songs My Mother Taught Me) is a fascinating read, although apparently it's a largely inaccurate account.

I read Cujo a long time ago, but I enjoyed it at the time. It's probably been seven or eight years since I read it. I'd like to read it again some time. Carrie terrified me. I remember having difficulty sleeping the night I read it. You'll have to let me know how you like Cujo when you're done.

I picked up The Hellbound Heart at a bookstore last night and read it on my break today. It's excellent. I was very impressed with it. As for King... from what I've read, I think the best thing he's written is the novella Apt Pupil (in the collection Different Seasons). As for novels, I love The Long Walk, Dolores Claiborne, Pet Sematary, Rage and Christine. It's difficult to pick one! Have you just read The Shining so far?

Sorry for the late reply. I'm glad to hear you're reading. I haven't read The Hellbound Heart yet, but it's on my list. I really enjoyed Barker's first novel, The Damnation Game.

I've only read one book by Bukowski, A Night Torn Mad With Footsteps, great collection of poetry.

Yeah, I think so. It explicitly articulates a lot of themes that exist in all of Selby's novels/stories. In a lot of ways, it has probably influenced my writing more than any other book has.

Selby is definitely my all-time favorite writer. Reading his work is a visceral experience. I felt physically sick when I first read The Room. Burroughs has a similar intensity. Naked Lunch is one of the great American novels. I think you would really enjoy Junky and Queer.
