I am so happy that you spent so much of your time building AlbumPlays and I would love to be able to reflect my LastFM onto my MediaMonkey-database. Thank you so much!

hey, G'day Barry, we seem to have a lot of common artists, super compat, and in you're in Oz too, although I read somewhere that you're really a South Pacific Welshman (in disguise :) ) I guess it's not surprising 'that with your good taste in music that you're the right side of 50. I see from your shout's about NAS's and RAID versions, you're into IT too. I've sent you a friend request.

We are down to London in a week or two to visit two of our sons and our 3 grand-children...if I can get well again! Thanks for all the information and the Sonos link. I really do appreciate your time and help very much. Sounds like apple lossless may be the way for me. Was concerned if the eventual 12TB (or 6 in effect) would be sufficient to go for larger file size but I guess I could look to 4 x 4B drives (2, as you say, RAID 2 to start), instead of 3TB, to be sure? Probably never finish this ridiculously large task anyway!..... Not into mobile devices at all so that shouldn’t be an issue.

Hi Barry, hope your trip was good. Been laid low, still am, with bronchitis this end or would have sent shout sooner. I wondered if I could pick your brains please? As I think I said, the current NAS plan is a Synology DS413 with (initially) 2 Seagate 3TB drives - then add 2 more when needed as I won’t be ripping 15,000 items in a hurry! - set RAID 5. Does that seem o.k. to you? I am working from a MacBook Pro if that matters. Looks like you would recommend flac format? Does that make any difference to what I need to get? I will also give further thought to additional backup. Any opinion much appreciated as I am right at the point of ordering in the next day or 2 & don’t want to get it wrong. Many thanks. p.s: Kathy, my wife, probably has 7,500 photos & growing rapidly to fit on NAS too.

I have to say that the buggers would have to work REALLY hard to kill all your files - you would be forever able to say things like "ah yes, fiendish, but you overlooked two things, the complete backup I store in small bytes inside my tropical fish and that cloud up there? well it actually is MY cloud". I do take your considerable points onboard though so I mull on, the OCD had set in over no's of backups anyway before you 'enabled' me! Retirement is the least boring thing I have ever tried and that's after 35 years of assorted businesses of my own some of which I loved. I did miss the last one for quite a time without ever being in proper danger of starting something similar. It was mostly some of the people/times I guess but - as with this last trip away - I just keep in touch/meet up from time to time with 'the few'. Truth is I am a natural born hermit really - friendly, (honest!) - but content doing my own thing. Have a great time away, taking a Speaker with you by any chance?!

Apologies for the long delay. I was away 2 nights then posted a shout to you yesterday that just vanished when I hit 'post'! I trust that your scrobbling is also 100%? Trouble with OCD itches is that they find new avenues - I think subconsciously I was avoiding playing whole albums & using 'library' to avoid those group scrobbling failures so now mucho catching up to do! Glad I retired (well for now, we will see) 3 years ago - as they say "don't know how I ever found time for work"!. Thanks for the warnings over NAS. These concerns to make sure i get it right have stopped me leaping in as I usually do. Robin at Sonos has (personally) suggested a Synology DS413 RAID5 with a couple of 3/4TB drives to start (so built in backup) then expand to 4 drives as & when. Stuff like tagging & display/functionality/usability with my MacBook Pro are all issues - never want to lose another scrobble for instance! If you have any thoughts they will be very welcome as you clearly know your stuff.

Yes that "collectors" instinct is dangerous isn't it? it has been an enormous decision for me to stop buying CD's but I genuinely feel liberated now. After years of every Monday being a trip to the record store ("old days"), every week ordering from Amazon & specialists to get first day releases. THEN of course discovering a new artist & having to buy all the back catalogue within days! I will admit though I still have a list of new releases for each week and am grumpy if any of the titles are not available on Spotify or Napster (even if I don't ever actually have time to listen to them all!!). But shhh as you say... about that too as the need to collect & have that accurate statistical information, which is somehow absolutely essential to me too, is a bit weird really (I guess I have just got used to it after 40+ years). Now how do I actually go about selling 15k titles (big shhh..) without giving 'em away?

You & Rob writing your own scrobblers is to me like you are clearly wizards or warlocks. You aren't are you?

Not very well today. Just realised I sent this shout to myself!! Hi Barry, good to hear from you. I read your latest forum addition & that seems pretty much on the money. I am going to contact Sonos directly again today. Musically Sonos has also seen me playing much more music. I have a lot of physical CD's (& vinyl - i note we are similar age!) and I resisted the download world quite well, but this 'instant everything' has changed my listening style forever I guess. I am intrigued, Sonos etc. is making me think of gradually committing titles to a NAS & making space by actually slowly selling off thousands & thousands of physical titles - but you say you are now buying more again too? I wondered why! I have been buying at an alarming rate since i was 14 &, if anything that rate has increased through the years, but Sonos/Spotify etc. has stopped my buying in its tracks (no pun really intended!)

Great music taste Barry! Quite a few folk I don't know in there too for me to check out. Thanks for putting your profile link in to our 'scrobbling forum' discussion. Love ianmacd's shout below as well. Now he knows you are not dead just 'silenced'!

How could I not leave you a shout, Barry? 36500+ tracks since August '09? Not bad at all. That tells me all I need to know about the role of music in your life. Last.fm informs me that we are moderately musically compatible. Then again, it would be kind of crazy if our profiles didn't have SOME overlap, don't you think? Cheers!
