i know two or three people who have tried hotel ariston in via fiesolana which shouldn't be too expensive and it's in the city center so it's nice, right in front of a nice pub and 15 mins walk to the main sightseeing in florence. Right at the corner there's a very nice restaurant which is also cheap and makes typical local food, it's called la pentola d'oro i think. If you are ok with sleeping on a couch or something like that just let me know, I'll ask around and see if we can get a place for you guys.
