Fleshmeadow brought me here. Not really into BM in general but heard their album recently and really dig it. Hadn't even heard of technical black metal before. Seems most of the bands here are considered other subgenres of black metal first and tech as somewhat of an afterthought, so I guess it's not much of a thing. Shame.

Ah, I know Krallice. I listened to them a few times, but don't remember what they sound like. But I liked them. If I didn't, I wouldn't have scrobbled them or remove them from my library. I didn't know they were considered technical black metal. I didn't know about Imperial Triumphant. Ah and don't know Drottnar either.

I'm listening to Vile Luxury, the 2018 album and I gotta say it's fantastic! Highly creative technical black metal!

DsO strike me as technical in the same way Gorguts are technical; while they seem to have chaos as a primary aim of their music, they also seem to be focused on creating that chaos through musical complexity. Compare both bands to something like, say, Portal, which is somewhat less technical musically but still equally chaotic. I neglected to mention Immortal in my previous shout, who are particularly technical on their early releases like Pure Holocaust and Battles on the North but have continued to perform fairly technical music at least through All Shall Fall. (Abbath's solo album continues the trend; just listen to those bass lines). Granted, a lot of modern BM bands have surpassed their technicality, but in comparison to any other second-wave band I can think of they stand out.

Although playing a DSO song is technically challenging relatively speaking, I I dont think its fair to describe them as technical, "chaotic" would be more fitting - as in they dont aim to be technical (like say The Dilinger Escape Plan or Nile do), the random bouts of technicality here and there are more just a byproduct than the focus of their songwriting.....Krallice I'll have to re-listen to and see if they're technical

"There is no such thing as technical back metal unfortunately." someone's clearly never heard Krallice or Mikko Aspa-era Deathspell Omega

modern-era Mayhem are about as complex as black metal gets and they themselves claim to still be very simple. It's just an illusion of good song writing and atypical riffing.

May be people mix the terms 'progressive' or 'avant-garde' and 'technical' up here. As I understand it, progressive BM is about long sophisticated compositions, avant-garde BM is original sounding, perhaps weird at first glimpse (and utterly untrve) and technical BM would be about raping your instrument in complicated rythms, just like in Death Metal. So far, I haven't listened to any BM band that could be classified as technical.

useless without perfect production, which is not likely to happen with black metal,
