Sounds really odd to say this, especially for a niche genre like this, but psybient is my childhood. It's my nostalgia genre, and what I guess I'd call my musical home. RadioIO Ambient directed me to this world and Last.fm did the rest. And sure there are other genres like electronica, new age, even the popular classic early 00s bands like Coldplay, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and early 00s pop that I listened to here and there, but psybient was so much of my life. I'd spend hours browsing through artists, trying to download catalogues, organising ID3 tags in my iTunes collection for psybient music, making playlists that I could sync to my iPod Nano and PSP. It'd be an honour to make some homage to this incredible genre one day 👌

  So a big shout out to my older brother, that Jean-Michel Jarre Oxygene/Equinoxe cassette at home, Starry Night Bundle (8.0?) on Windows 98, Windows Media Player's internet radio service, RadioIO Ambient, last.fm, that internet radio 'app' on the PSP, video games, groovesalad, all those parts of the internet that I got the music from, and last but not least, the amazing artists themselves for shaping so much of my musical identity, and by extension shaping a lot of me. I'll probably post any future shoutouts along this thread

    Welcome to my life, for the most part psychill/psybient (whatever you wanna call it) was in the grand scheme of things such a small pool of artists compared to much else but top quality, vibrant music that never gets old to me. Think it really started dropping off after 2012 (how fitting) and it just never really felt the same after that even though some good stuff came out after. The pre-2010 stuff was the best, the late 90's to the earlier 2000's. Started out with Shpongle and Saafi Brothers and never looked back. I found it all through youtube one day somehow a long time ago and then the real last.fm before this watered down version of the site we have now showed me everything else.

    yeah man, this last.fm sucks. I miss the old one. I was too young to really appreciate it, too young to properly form meaningful connections (I was a bit of an edgy/trolly teen at times), and most of the people around me on last.fm (neighbours, those that found my profile, friends etc.) were almost all 25+ years old. IRL no one shared my psy-world taste apart from my older brother, and I was only just old enough to start forming good friendships on here by the time this place went to crap. Wish I could be me now, and go back to last.fm then. Though it's not all bad, my taste has grown to other areas and I've got irl friends that I now share a lot of music taste with. Still yet to truly meet a psyhead irl though. And yeah I kinda agree about psy before the 10's vs after the 10's. Idk what it is, whether it's like childhood attachment/nostalgia, but the psy these days isn't quite what it used to be. Don't get me wrong, there's still great releases coming out (1/2)

    and big names are still doing great (Ott, Shpongle, Bluetech, Pitch Black etc.) but the scene just isn't what it was in the 90's and 00's. I've seen that some artists have drifted off to other styles also (Phutureprimitive, Liquid Stranger). I myself have become somewhat of a producer, and psy definitely plays a role in my writing style though the genres I cover are more IDM/electronica/rave/DnB/ambient. It would be interesting to try my hands at a psybeint style track though. but I fear that my attempts would be too meek or artificial - constantly comparing myself to the best efforts and feeling that mine pale in comparison
