A tag which can be understood in two ways. Most often it is used for bands that played heavy psychedelic blues rock or something close in the late '60s or early '70 era: sometimes it sounds like early metal, more often it doesn't, but still at least somewhat close or adjacent to the work of Black Sabbath, thus justyfing the tag. On the other hand, although proper metal music existed since 1970 as a peculiar form of hard rock, it was rare, wasn't clearly separated from the latter and had not yet been recognized as a distinct genre. There were almost no (major) bands who focused primarily on this music in the 1970s, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest were the main exceptions, and several others who came close. And metal identity as such appeared only in 1978, when Rob Halford adopted S&M looks, and then it was picked up by the NWOBHM movement. So this tag might also be appropriate for the earlier songs that were metal musically, but not generally identified as such at the time.

Coven are only thrown in with the proto-metal stuff because of the Satanic and occult themes which are also prevalent in heavy metal.. musically they are more akin to the psychedelic folky rock coming out of san francisco at the time... the Jefferson Airplane comparisons seem pretty sound to me, although i'm admittedly not very familiar with Jefferson Airplane..
