These shouts are disappointing. Every gothic subgenre tag is flooded with moaning, elitism and arguing instead of trying to have an actual discussion. Although it is understandable to a degree since bands keep getting mistagged.

I see Industrial, EBM, techno, Rave and all that other garbage has infected the Darkwave tag just like it has with the Goth tag. Now we just need to sit and wait for all the Industrial/EBM bands to start calling them self Deathrock and the circle will be complete ;)

Darkwave nowadays is much wider term than only classics. I agree it's often misused, but it goes more to "new breed" artists who are tagged as darkwave, as people are blind and think "darkwave" is another new "wave" genre that didn't exist in the past. For me darkwave is as well Clan of Xymox and Blutengel, I'm also so happy to recognise bands such as Absurd Minds as "darkwave influenced". It's nice that this genre became so diversified, but yes, I know this means also it gets far away from its core. But it always happens and keeps genres alive.

Darkwave is a legit term (used since the 80s, especially in the German area) and definitely not the reason why everyone hates goth. The reason for that are dumb “alternative” magazines and labels trying to sell their crap like Blutengel or Cybergoff-techno as gawfick or darkwave. I'd personally would see darkwave mostly as an umbrella term –than a genre– for dark, elegic music that developed within the 80s new wave movement. You can split it into subgenres like Ethereal, Neoclassical or Electrowave if you will, but for some bands finding a legit genre tag can be hard – in that case the darkwave term can be very handy.
