Bitcore (also known as chip rock, chipcore and nintendocore) is a broad term for music that mixes chiptune and rock, most often metalcore or post-hardcore. It can also be considered either related to or a subgenre of electronic rock, synth-metal and/or electronicore. Notable bands include Horse the Band, I Fight Dragons, iamerror, Math the Band, Crying, and more. In terms of chiptune, the genre often uses Game Boy or NES, however other styles and systems are also used such as Commodore 64 and advanced technology like synthesizers or music software used to mimic genuine sound chips.
The genre originates from Horse the Band in 2001, peaked in the mid-late 2000s, with most popularity on MySpace, and has since declined into the niche underground. Bitcore is often associated with the metalcore, cybergrind, post-hardcore, synthpunk and extreme electronic music scenes as well as the scene subculture.
Subgenres include bitpunk, blackened chiptune, bitgrind, indie chiptune and ambient bitcore.
Bitcore is also known as an alternative name for chipbreak.
