this is as good a song as the beatles ever made (or very nearly), and the context around its creation and release best sum up the mainstream-revolutionary appeal that's at the heart of their legend. what a beautiful band

You know, I absolutely love Magical Mystery Tour to bits, but this is the weakest track on the album by far. The music is fine, it's great, but the lyrics are just so childishly idealistic and inane that I can't get into it. And I'm a pacifist hippie kinda person. It's somehow worse that it's the last song on the album, because it's such a sour note to go out on. A lot of people seem to love the song and that's fine, but damn, I don't get it.

it's beautiful. the song's debut (performed and recorded live!) was televised to 400 million viewers worldwide for a kind of proto-eurovision competition, and john knew they needed something special for that occasion – he wrote the lyric as simply as possible to make it easy to understand on first listen, particularly for people who don't speak english. even the interpolation of one of their own biggest global hits at the end is a loving message to the world (and probably some of the earliest and cleverest 'fan service' ever recorded). the strange meter and psychedelic outro are plenty of subversion for an audience that big, john was right to keep the sophistication in the music and go universal with the words

This is by far one of my least favorite Beatles songs in general. I mean, it’s still a decent song cuz it’s The Beatles but I tend to skip this one a lot.

El_Salvador7 has it right: [2] Musically, this is one of the Beatles' finest efforts. No other pop band before or after could so effortlessly adapt a 7/4 measure in a love song (or a song about love). It's hard to make a strange measure like that sound logical in a pop song, yet The Beatles did it. Besides that the trademark extremely simple, yet extremely powerful, catchy, imaginative and descriptive lyrics by Lennon make up for the rest.

I thing I will give credit to the 'beta' version of last.fm is when I hear a Beatles song, I am actually hearing a Beatles song, and not that snarky cover stuff!
