Organised to conmemorate the 25th anniversary of the original Woodstock festival, Woodstock 94 took place at a large field within Winston Farm in Saugerties, New York (Ulster county), located about 100 miles north of New York City and only 10 miles from the town of Woodstock. The site was already proposed as an ideal location back in 1969 but permits were not granted so it had to be moved to Sullivan County, much further from the namesake town. Originally planned as "Two more days of peace and music", eventually a third date and more bands were added.
