“Most artists come with a label, a box their music fits in,” says Jihae. “My mentality is: I don’t like to repeat myself.” Jihae is certainly not an artist you could accuse of doing the same thing over and over.The New York-based singer and multimedia artist not only spans genres, she defies mediums. As a musician, she’s released four critically-acclaimed albums, lauded in the likes of Pitchfork, MTV, IFC and Vogue. And she’s been a collaborator, musically and visually, with creatives as varied as Michel Gondry, Christopher Doyle, Peter Beard and Marco Brambilla. As if she’s not busy enough: Jihae also runs a multimedia studio and label called Septem—which is releasing Illusion—and planning a rather epic live multimedia art exhibit/performance show to go along with the album. “I like marrying the concept of music with new media art forms,” says the singer. “After all, it’s about creating different illusions.”
