MARK FELL
A Performance
Tuesday, October 16, 9pm (promptly)
The British electronic musician Mark Fell will perform a set that takes up the concerns of his 2011 release MULTI-STABILITY (Raster-Noton catalog#: R-N 125-2). In the field of Gestalt psychology the term “multistability” refers to the effect where one is unable to perceive a single stable object within complex or ambiguous patterns. The term is also found in systems theory where it describes a condition that is neither stable nor unstable, where a system switches between different states. Appropriately named, this Fell piece mucks up temporal divisions with unfamiliar timing and tuning systems. These non-repetitive structures are made with simple computational algorithms. It might be helpful to keep in mind Fell’s claim that “music is a technology for constructing an experience of time.”
