"I'll Be Your Jonny on the Spot" was written and recorded in early 1996 at a rental house in New Hope, Pennsylvania, after Ween's previous rented beach house flooded. The unusual effect on the guitar solo was created by a ring modulator kit ("like a Radio Shack kit"), built for Dean Ween by his guitar tech. Dean has said, "I’ve always been really proud of the solo on that song. It broke, and it was only used on that one song."

Despite being released on 1997's The Mollusk, "I'll Be Your Jonny on the Spot" was actually debuted live the previous year on the 12 Golden Country Greats tour with country instrumentation. The regular Ween live band didn't introduce the song until 1999, but thereafter it became a common live song, and has remained so ever since. A 11/7-8/2003 recording from the Quebec tour can be heard on the Live in Chicago album.

In addition, "I'll Be Your Jonny on the Spot" has been played separately numerous times by both the Dean Ween Group and the Gene Ween Band.
