Biography
Started in 2008, Trees To Sleep Under is a solo project that documents not only the music of Eric Velander, but also the experience. His self-titled debut tells the story of him leaving his home of Omaha, Nebraska to join the US military and all the complications that accompanied it—from anxiety to alcoholism.
And although there is only one word uttered on the entire album, this is not a piece of music lacking in emotion: every song is a story from a different point of view.
In addition to being entirely instrumental, this album is also entirely made using electronic instruments, with the exception of a few guitar riffs here and there. The vast majority was composed in GarageBand and played on a keyboard.
The compositions are consistently strong, though, and it is easy to see how much potential the music has by imagining fully fleshed out, recorded versions of these tracks. It is a fairly lo-fi debut, but the music doesn’t suffer for it at all, and it is clear that Eric will only get better from this point onward.
