Tori Amos (born Myra Ellen Amos; August 22, 1963) is an American singer-songwriter and pianist. She is classically trained and has a mezzo-soprano vocal range. Amos began composing instrumental piano pieces at a young age and won a full scholarship to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University when she was five, becoming the youngest person admitted. She left the institute at eleven after her scholarship was discontinued.
In the 1980s, Amos was the lead singer of the pop-rock group Y Kant Tori Read before launching her solo career in the early 1990s. Her music addresses a variety of themes, including sexuality, feminism, politics, and religion.
Amos has released several singles that charted, including "Crucify," "Silent All These Years," "God," "Cornflake Girl," "Caught a Lite Sneeze," "Professional Widow," "Spark," "1000 Oceans," "Flavor," and "A Sorta Fairytale." She has received five MTV Video Music Award nominations and eight Grammy Award nominations. Additionally, she won an Echo Klassik award for the album "Night of Hunters," which is a classical crossover project. She was ranked number 71 on VH1's 1999 list of the "100 Greatest Women of Rock and Roll."
