Tilman Ehrhorn´s debut album "Task", influenced by other contemporary electronic
artists as well as his background in jazz music, was released on the Mille Plateaux
label in 2003. On his sophomore album *Heading For The Open Spaces* he turned
towards a more or less characteristic ambient sound, working with calm tracks,
sounds and atmospheres, that are nevertheless inspired by the funkyness of 70́s
jazzrock music. The manufacturing process of his newest album "Past Utopia" is
still based on sample work and software but besides the virtual sound design,
instruments like vintage analogue synthesizers and electric guitars are used as a
source of sound. Most of the tracks on "Past Utopia" are musically inspired through
British Pop Music. The beginning of the Psychedelic/Progessive Rock era of the late
sixtieśs, including groups lush as Pink Floyd, Genesis, Tomorrow and Yes might be
as well a big influence as conceptional productions of the early and mid-eighties,
like Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Depeche Mode and Talk Talk. Therefore the idea
behind "Past Utopia" is to introduce music that doesn't fit into the stereotypical
attributes of electronic music. Instead, Tilman has crafted abstract and modified
instrumental pop songs that combine the spirit of different musical epochs with an
individual idea of electronic music.
