Biography

If The Ums took themselves seriously enough to have a motto, it might be something like this variation on Walt Whitman’s famous conceit: “Do we contradict ourselves? Very well then, we contradict ourselves… We are The Ums. We contain multitudes.” With their playful mélange of post-rock, geek rock, soul, British Invasion-era pop and psychedelia, The Ums are veritable virtuosos of self-contradiction, spinning out sugary coated pop-confections, which seem to hint at hidden emotional depths in their lighter moments even while delivering some unlikely punchline in their more earnest moments. Another way to look at it is this: The Ums are like the illegitimate musical progeny of The Beatles and They Might Be Giants—sort of like John Lennon meets John Linnell. And yet, there’s still far more to The Ums unique guitar-oriented pop stylings than this brief introduction can do justice—something that throws you ever-so-slightly off balance but keeps you coming back for more. But don't take our word for it. Why not try The Ums out for yourself?
