After their previous known EPs —
Superclean Vol. I and Superclean Vol. II, CINEMA marks the official debut album of the LA duo The Marías, featuring tracks in English and Spanish, is inspired by classic films and directors that María and Josh grew up watching, including Pedro Almodóvar and Wes Anderson.

The title also pays homage to how the band began to create music. “The Marías were born of cinema”, says María, adding:

"The reason Josh and I started writing music together was because of the cinema. Through a friend, we got in touch with a music supervisor who sent us music requests for movies. We got a synopsis of a scene and then we had to write the music in a couple of days. That not only taught us to write songs together pretty quickly, but also to think like filmmakers. We imagined worlds in our minds based on the synopsis: the colors of the scene, the lighting, the actors, the stage design and of course, the music."

The Marías shared the announcement of the album with an album trailer on April 19th, 2021 via Instagram, and later on April 29th, revealed the lead single for the project “Hush”.
