"Lay of the Land" fucking rules. Possibly the most powerful sounding song they've ever done. Then you've got "Disney's Dream Debased," which is beautiful, with amazing lyrics. The CD issues of this one are so fucked up that I often lose track of what songs made up the original album, plus there was the original LP with its track listing, the cassette version with its own track listing and the US CD version with yet another selection of songs. If we recognize the original LP as the official album, which I suppose we should, it's still quite good and on par with This Nation's Saving Grace if not quite as good. "2x4," "Bug Day" (yeah, that's right), "Stephen Song" and "Craigness" are all very good. "Copped It" is horrible and grating as fuck thanks to Gavin Friday's vocals (he was okay on the wonderful "Clear Off!") and "Elves" is too blatant a "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog" rip-off for me to have any respect for it. "Slang King" is pretty forgettable to me.

The best thing about this album is its consistency; try singing the phrase 'Mark E. Smith is off his tits' to each of the tracks, and you'll see what I mean ;)

If Oh! Brother had been on the actual album, this would be my undisputed favourite.

I've heard every album between Dragnet and The Frenz Experiment and this is the best with Slates and Perverted By Language not far behind.

2 * 4? I only scrobble it like that so it shows the album cover on my recently listened tracks. Otherwise it seems like i'm not scrobbling right despite the actual title is "2 x 4" (I guess someone thought it was "2 times 4" not "2 by 4").
