Mark E. Smith is such an incredible lyricist. His words to me are like the embodiment of the surrealist concept of "objective chance," where unpredictable encounters with unexpected words give rise to the emergence of new ideas and wild daydreams. Call his lyrics nonsense, sure, but I appreciate abstract lyrics because ordinary objects such as chairs, clocks, and colours lose their primary sense and speak to me differently, expanding my attention beyond what is objectively visible. The Fall is just endlessly inspiring<3

He was the Ernest Hemingway of rock and roll. He literally just got drunk and wrote whatever came to mind, like how Hemingway got drunk and wrote his books.

I can't handle listening to The Fall very often, but I still recognize talent when I hear it.

Hello! I make music under the name "Avargyűjtő" (Fallen Leaves Collector) in Budapest, Hungary. In addition to Surfrock and Krautrock, I primarily follow the traditions of contemporary Eastern European and Russian Post-Punk. I don't make money with my music, and I don't plan concerts either. I have money, and i don't want to be famous. For me it's just about the Post-Punk, Krautrock and Surfrock legacy, which I'm trying to authentically carry forward. ........................................................... it's almost impossible that a band as perfect and audacious as The Fall ever existed. we didn't know how good we had it.

I don't mean that the output was perfect (except sometimes), it was so manic and unpredictable, sometimes bad, but the idea of The Fall was perfect. We took the semi-yearly albums for granted because it was perpertual.

Damn, O-Mit is such a blast. So powerful, so real. How ruthlessly great MES was, can't even describe that mix of respect and grieving I felt while listening

Does anyone know what happened to FHR on spotify? Are some labels fighting over rights again or they preparing a fucking remaster reissue again?

For early period: Live at the Witch Trials, Perverted by Language, Slates. Mid-period: Shift-work. Later era: The Marshall Suite, The Unutterable. The Rough Trade Singles comp of 50,000 Fall Fans are essential too. Fun going through chronologically and hearing their sound develop. Super rewarding.

There is no wrong answer to this question, just different ones. Hex Enduction Hour, This Nations Saving Grace, The Infotainment Scan, The Real New Fall LP, Imperial Wax Solvent, Your Future, Our Clutter. All awesome in addition to the ones already mentioned. 50,000 Fall fans can't be wrong is essential listening as many greats songs were released as singles so you miss out on great songs if you only listen to the albumd. My favorite Fall album is usually the one I am listening to. The only ones I would skip at first are the recently issued Live albums, many are bootleg quality. Welcome to an entire lifetimes worth of discovery. Even some things that might sound like crap at first can later blow your mind when you understand it.

when you listen to a random fall song by accident and then you realize it's the best song ever written and then you realize it's only got 3.2k listeners on last.fm and then you realize that's like every fall song

I feel obliged to explain my last entry concerning Marcel Duchamp and The Fall. What I meant was to call atention to the dadaist tendencies of the band. With all its acid, witty lyrics that may seem to be nothing but gibberish to some and highly erratic and idiosyncratic musical achievements, The Fall seem to incorporate and disseminate Dada into the spectrum of music as a whole. Just as Duchamp did with Art in the beginning of the XX, which was, acts of total destruction towards art as it was then conceived, The Fall manages to do the same: it takes musical elements and dissect it, poke at it, take it out of context, and all and all, destroy it. The goal of The Fall was to kill music as per se, and in the process, they made one of the most unique, bizarre, wretched, engaging, putrid and dada music and art. Innovation through destruction. Don't believe me? Look at their album covers! They're making fun of the music industry, themselves, me and you too!

The design of the albums was more because MES liked the aesthetic of cheap design and local cash-and-carry signs. It's more of an adoption of working-class aesthetics than a parody of them.
