Biography
After four internationally renouned and successful demo albums, The Bananas are publishing their first studio album called To Surf and Protect containing 21 copyright songs that were given best reviews by foreign music critics.
For all of you tired of listening to generic songs, we add the now playing single “Raging El Niño”,
that will soon be acompanied by a video. The live presentation of the album will be taking place on Saturday the 10th of October, in Orto bar.
Locally, The Bananas are the most identifiable representatives of their genre at the moment. They did not follow the usual path most young bands take playing hits of other artists, but made their mark even in their earlieast days by writing their own music, that is now, with their latest album, at its best so far.
The great local audience responses were only confirmed by acknowledgements from other continents and The Bananas can now bragg with pleasing reviews by the best in the surf genre music industry. Phil Dirt, the most influental critic of surf rock music in the United States, gave all their demo albums top reviews. As a result their music was played on American radio stations. This led to a recording offer by an American publishing house called Golly Gee. But in the end, the band decided on a local release with the help of Street13.
The Bananas grew under the influence of another Slovenian surf rock band, The Bitch Boys. The Bananas were founded in 2002. The two groups are bound by more than just friendship as The Bitch Boys helped them find their own sound in the surfing melodies. The Bitch Boys also gave them their first chance, when they played together in the late legendary Hound Dog club.
At the time the members were still in school and who would have thought that their economy teacher would be the inspiration that bound them together. The story can sound a bit bizzare, if you're not aware that the teacher, Robi Bilodžerič, is a member of the Bitch Boys…
A lot of years have passed since that concert but The Bananas are still relentlessly representing their vision of music under the influence of surf rhythms.
Their music was heard both on the usual and the not so usual rock stages varying from a packed Orto Bar, Rdeča Ostriga in Škofja Loka, Patriot in Novo Mesto to Pločnik in Ljubljana, ŠK Bled, Prešeren square in Ljubljana, Lunapark, K4 club, the Student Arena, Metelkova… to name but a few. The band was also part of Wave 1, the first surf festival in Slovenia (it took place in AKC Kranj and the Student Arena), of Wheelsmania, the first local US oldtimer car gathering and of the Brucovanje festival in Gospodarsko razstavišče.
As far as the music is concerned, The Bananas are hyperactive, but with a positive connotation, not to worry. In September of 2002, just a few months after the band was formed a 22 minute demo album called “Staaarrii” was released. Out of the 10 tracks on it, four were created by the band. Their second demo album, a product of creative thinking and pleasure that the band gets from playing surf music, was called “Greasy Peel”. It holds 15 tracks (10 written by the band) which adds up to 40 minutes of great surf music.
Their third demo album “Tsumoning Tsunami” saw the light of day in 2004.
And now it is time for their first studio album titeled “To Surf and Protect”, without a doubt the most interesting surf odyssey from The Bananas so far.
