The project was formed in Parma, Italy, in 1981, with five members, Andrea Azzali, Simon Balestrazzi, Giorgio Barbuti, Fabio Cortesi and Giampaolo Terenziani. The name is the Italian for the medical imaging device Computed Tomography (CT).
