For Hero: For Fool is the third Subtle full-lenght project, but also the first (and only) to be released for a major; in fact the band was signed to EMI and this album was released on the aforementioned label, as well for Lex Records (in the UK), Hostess Entertainment Unlimited (in Japan) and Astralwerks (in the USA).

In May 28th 2005, Dax Pierson, i.e the pianist/chorist/harmonica player of the band, was a victim of a tragic car accident, that left him quadriplegic. The band almost broke up after this.
But then, towards the end of the year, Doseone and his bandmate Jordan Dalrymple locked themselves in the studio and started making demos again, gradually brought in the other four (including Dax) to finish a new album. On May 28th 2006 a video surfaced on YouTube, featuring footage of the band recording Middleclass Stomp and revealing that the record will come out for the end of the summer.

On July 26th 2006 Doseone revelead to Pitchfork that Subtle signed a distribution deal with EMI, revealing also the release date of the album. The project was recorded and mixed at SF Soundworks, in San Francisco, which was a more professional enviroment, in contraxt with their first home recordings gathered in the album Earthsick. The Mercury Craze, the first and only single taken from the album, will be released in August 2006. For Hero: For Fool came out on October 3rd 2006.

The vinyl release of the record also came out with a themed board game.

For Hero: For Fool is critically seen as Subtle’s magnus opus, it was given a 10 out of 10 by Drowned In Sound and was proclaimed album of the year 2006 by CokeMachineGlow.
