SPARROW FALLS was formed in the fall of 2005 by vocalist/lyricist Merijn Verhees and guitarist/songwriter Ed van Hees. From their home base Maastricht, the Netherlands, the line-up was completed with guitarist Lando van Berlo, Boris Wouters on bass and Youri Linskens on drums. After having played in various loud guitar bands, all their expertise was pulled together in a new musical group that does not limit itself to any genre. With influences from punk and post-hardcore bands like Hot Water Music and Thrice, hard rock icons Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden, folk and country artists, and experimental singersongwriters such as Tom Waits and Joanna Newsom, Sparrow Falls cannot be summarized with any one label.
In 2006, they released a self-titled EP which the band recorded with producer Igor Wouters (Backfire!, Malle Pietje & The Bimbos). Following an intensive touring period end 2006 / beginning 2007, Sparrow Falls went back to the studio and recorded two songs, including a cover of electro-pop duo The Knife’s ‘Heartbeats’. Yet, things slowed down in spring 2008 when guitarist Ed van Hees barely survived a heavy accident and the band was put on a hold. During his revalidation however, Ed wrote many new songs and some lyrics influenced by this event. As soon as he had properly recovered, the band started rehearsing again with the aim of capturing these new compositions on their full-length debut.
And now, summer 2010, here it is: Tides, the long awaited album defining the true Sparrow Falls sound. This is not your local punk rock band singing about being in a band; it’s a one of its kind record that has it all: overwhelming power and quiet contemplation, intricate melodies and massive harmonies, bashing guitars and a lonesome piano. Tides is like drifting in mud water and sailing fiery storms at the same time. It’s dark, but like the on-stage shaded-lamps framing the band’s energetic live shows, it has lightness drawn from almost any musical genre. Sparrow Falls is a stylistic experiment that works despite the odds.
Listen to Tides and see them on stage. It’s all the proof you need.
