Biography
Formed in 2000 from musicians collaborating with Nerm in his DJ sets, Shiva Soundsystem is now an organisation that boasts DJs, producers, musicians, designers and behind the scenes staff based in East London.
We put on regular events as well as tour a heck lot. Recently we covered India & Canada and mashed up Lovebox, Rise & Glastonbury for the second year running. We also feature on radio and TV a bit, including a mini doc on BBC 2 and a one-off show on Radio One.
Our original aim was to provide something different than the usual "British Asian" or "Urban" Pop and R&B that, for us, holds no connection.
Everything we do now is about challenging perceptions not just about British Asians but the UK itself, a nation that has bought us all together and provided such a rich musical landscape. Our love & passion is the music that the UK gave birth to from alternative Rock (Punk) to alternative Dance (Drum & Bass).
We've just set up a record label to push the talents of the many producers involved. So far:
Adhesive produced some of the earliest Shiva Soundsystem material back in 2001.
Prash Mistry aka Catch 22 Productions produced Shiva Theme and the majority of sounds from 2002 - 2004 period.
Martin James produced our first release in India, "Keep It Apnin"
D-Code produced our debut single Mumbai Cells, remixed Come Around by Rock I.D and alongside his brother Silent Source, remixed Round Up by Asian Dub Foundation, Eye of The Storm by Visionary Underground and produced the B-side to Mumbai Cells, Tubla Ethics.
Soldgie & D-Code produced You're Mine, due for release soon.
Nerm mainly makes tea but occasionaly does some work. He and D-code remixed Desi Rock by Swami and recently produced Post 9/11 Lockdown with Riz MC
There's loads more music from our family of producers & musicians in the vaults that we hope to unleash soon.
Essentialy, we're about good content - music, film, events, design - whatever. Music is our main weapon of choice… for now.
