Biography
Shaun is the youngest of 5 children. An entrepreneur from the get go, his first business venture was selling cigarettes he had stolen from the local store and on selling to friends and friendly neighbors at bargain prices. Age 10.
Like his Father, who defied his Fathers wishes by drumming in rock ’n’ roll bands instead of his beloved marching band, Shaun set course, though maybe unconsciously at first, to do the same – Defy sensibility and become a musician. Surrounded by his Father’s records, he listened. Carefully.
Since the mid nineties Shaun has been finding his feet musically, flying many banners for many bands (February, Massa) until finally figuring it was easier to go alone. After saying his good-byes he fronted up with his first solo offering "The Fire Above and Safe Songs Below" in 2004. Though sales were 'first in, first served', Shaun was somewhat surprised by the response –and so, he laid out plans for his second installment "The Stand Sure Oak" with Twig Records (NZ) stepping in to bat for the team. Things were looking up for the young thief.
Studying audio engineering he picked up that important skill that all struggling artist need – How to record your own records for free. And by learning a few instruments and adding them to his arsenal, he kept the wolf from the door. Just.
Various singles of his have been seen lurking on various compilations. Canadian compilation "If You Believe" vol.1 (9.12 Records) picked up title song from his EP "The Stand Sure Oak", the ever sure A Low Hum compilation (NZ) picked up "The Overcomer" and also A Low Hum's Singles Club sent "The Stand Sure Oak" out with their very sort after singles catalog.
2007 saw Shaun heading off on his first solo tour with comrades, Achilles Botes (Ghostplane) and Mathew Hollemen (Twig Records). The tour drew small but quiet and polite, candle lit crowds. Rewarding them with free badges that Shaun had made himself, slowly but surely the good news was spread.
Shaun has kicked off the year well with shows at arguably the best music festival in Australasia – Camp A Low Hum. With banjo picker and all rounder Rene Macaulay in tow, Shaun’s shows are finding their way through the dark.
On the horizon: an album due in June 2008 is causing birthing pains but, oh the joy when it is done. 3 videos will follow this release. Shaun is aiming to tour the whole of his homeland New Zealand in 2008 with the bus rolling out in April to dominate the south with Christchurch’s, Enright House.
