“Ocean” is a surreal, hope-tinged collaboration between EDM producers Seven Lions and Jason Ross, featuring Jonathan Mendelsohn’s smooth vocals. As the electronic duo unite over dreamy melodic dubstep drops, Jonathan Mendelsohn sings about becoming disillusioned with love.

The official lyric video appears to be a sequel to that of Seven Lions' earlier track “Calling You Home”, as they feature the same “main character”, a young girl with magic, and display recurring themes of the ocean and a peculiar volume with glyphs reminiscent of Marvel’s Doctor Strange. In the lyric video for “Calling You Home”, the girl is awakened amidst a dusty library by a smiling woman all in white, who first gives her the volume. Activating the volume’s magic, the girl is teleported to a cave by the ocean, where she meets the woman and receives a triangular glyph. The woman disappears, and the girl is left standing beneath a shaft of sunlight.
Between this storyline and that of “Ocean”, not much is explained, though we now glimpse the girl floating beneath the ocean’s surface, in what appears to be the aftermath of a shipwreck. She dives after the magical volume, whose pages are disintegrating and revealing more of the cryptic glyphs. Activating one, the girl dives deeper, and discovers a man, who she pulls to the surface. Considering the theme of blooming love in “Calling You Home” and the contrasting theme of disillusion with love, the woman in white and the book’s glyphs shown in the parallel lyric videos could point to an arcane power rousing the girl to embrace her own destiny. Accepting the woman in white’s gift and saving the drowning man could be her first steps towards this goal.
