Biography
Sajida Obeid (ساجدة عبيد) is an Iraqi gypsy singer. She has been dubbed the “Queen of Weddings in Iraq.” She began her career in the 70s, performing traditional Iraqi songs. In 2002, she had a breakthrough with her song, “El Sheesha.” In the same year, she released a hugely popular repertoire of Iraqi song covers like “Hatha El Helw,” “Shgad El Galb,” and “Khala Ya Khala.” Obeid has performed in the Radh music style, which can be characterized as dance music with added synthesizers, as well as the more relaxed Mawal style. Obeid has only performed in the traditional Iraqi dialect, with an exception of having claimed to have performed works by Egyptian diva Umm Kulthum. Currently, Sajida Obeid has toured the Arab Gulf Region and her home country, Iraq. Additionally, Obeid has partaken in Switzerland’s Gypsy Festival in 2015, where gypsy artists from all over the world attended. Currently, Obeid lives in Iraq and is working on her newest album, in which she had already released three of the songs. She is signed to White Sea, an Iraqi music label.
