Biography

Södra Bergens Balalaikor (The South Mountain Balalajkas) is a non-profit orchestra based in Stockholm, Sweden that plays and sings folk music. The orchestra does not have a director, conductor or any other leader. All the members take turns as responsible for rehearsals and administration of the orchestra.

At the start (1969) the orchestra where represented by 30 prim-balalaikas and one guitar. Today it handles the whole and domra family as well as the Russian accordion (Bayan) and a lot of wind and rhythm instruments. Lately it has performed and played with some classical soloists such as Dan Laurin (recorder) and Cecila Zilliachus (violn) from Sweden and Olga Shishkina (gussli) from Russia.
